Chief Technology Officer at Map of Ag. Building a world where industry and farms thrive together. Connected agricultural data and smart software.
Last month we facilitated a webinar about how businesses are streamlining agrifood emissions reporting at scale. It's great for farmers and growers to be knowing their numbers and considering optimisations, but how do large #foodandbeverage or #fmcg businesses understand and report on their supply chain emissions? Simon Love, Meredith King, Scott Mckinnon and I explored this in the webinar. If you don't have time to watch the video, the blog post is a quick summary read. https://lnkd.in/gPnv_Q4e #agriculture #esg #sciencebasedtargets #tcfd

Why do lower carbon fertilizers have an important role to play in global GHG emissions reduction efforts? 🌾 Agriculture is one of the highest emitting industries, responsible for a quarter of all GHG emissions. To move the dial collaboration across the industry, and particularly with the farming community, will be crucial. Last week we were at the Low Carbon Agriculture Show speaking with UK farmers and advisors focused on decarbonizing their processes. It was an invaluable opportunity to speak about the opportunity lower carbon fertilizers provide for the long-term sustainability of the industry and open up dialogue on what more needs to be done to ensure farmers as well as fertilizer producers have the necessary support to make real change. 👉 Read more about why food system transformation is critical in addressing climate change while ensuring food security, and the critical role of regulation, in Hanh Nguyen’s recent article: https://lnkd.in/gqWATwuW

And that's a wrap on Reuters #TransformFood 2024. Thanks to Jay Watson from General Mills for the great conversation and thought-provoking insights on the power of collaboration as a tool to advance and advocate for climate solutions in the food space. Some core themes from the conference were: 1. Urgency: Companies cannot afford to waste a moment in adopting solutions to make food production sustainable for years to come. 2. Scale: We need collaboration, innovative financing, holistic value creation, and innovation to drive scale. 3. Farmer-centered: Farmers are already experiencing the impacts of extreme weather, and sustainability programs must center farmer priorities and experiences -- from design to implementation. As I shared in my remarks, here is one useful framework to deliver action and scale. 👩🌾 Act to implement scalable solutions. ✅ Advocate to reduce barriers to adoption of solutions – this can look like #collaborating with other companies or farmers to derisk single actions; or engaging with policy makers on broader enablers actions that will support implementation at #scale. 🔬 Advance promising solutions from R&D to commercialization to make sure that we have new solutions in the future that can deliver stronger outcomes for people and planet. My team at EDF + Business, along with experts at Deloitte have created a guide that details how to follow these three steps across six example commodities—wheat, corn, soy, beef, poultry, and dairy. 🌾🌽🌱🐂🐓🐄 Taking these three actions in tandem and in a way that accounts for the strategic differences among agricultural greenhouse gases will enable companies to better unlock the full extent of emissions reduction necessary to meet their climate targets, deliver maximum impact, and ultimately support swifter progress toward a more resilient agricultural system. 🌍 Learn more & download the guide here: https://lnkd.in/ecsM6irq

A food system is composed of several stages where inputs, agricultural commodities, processed food, and wastes are moving downward and upward a commodity chain: When it comes to carbon footprints, what we eat is far more impactful than where it comes from. There are lots of reasons to support local agriculture, but for the most carbon intensive foods, even shipping them halfway across the world represents a small fraction of their footprint. #climate #decarbonization #netzero #carbon #food #agriculture #climatedata #sustainability

"The organic waste that comes out of the food production cycle is significant, and food companies are all looking for ways to bolster their sustainability credentials and improve their margins,.." Thomas Farrugia and Nicola Gardner from Beta Bugs team up with Courtney Bosh and Howard Tang from Peritus Capital, an investment firm that invests in, supports, and finances the global development of companies that integrate Environmental, Social, Governance (ESG) principles into their business models, to talk about the rise in interest of insect farming technology from the waste management sector. Cocoa is one of our main ingredients in the products you know and love. Making traceability a priority means that we can better understand where our cocoa comes from and under which conditions it's produced, so we can effectively manage and nurture our supply chain. Not only have we reached 93% traceability to farm level, but we've also created programmes that help support our farmers by improving their cocoa farming practices, diversifying their income as well as strengthening their communities. Our Responsible Sourcing Manager, Olivier Zwolsman takes you through the highlights from our sustainability report. To learn more, head to our website: https://lnkd.in/eJ34h7Bt
