Food and Land Use Coalition (FOLU)

With Phase III of FOLU’s strategy on the horizon, we’re celebrating some of the impact the Coalition has had across the last 3 and a half years. From scaling regenerative agriculture in Ethiopia, to costing and modelling the mitigation potential of Nature-based Solutions in Kenya and India, we’ve been working with actors in seven countries and at global, regional, national and local levels to unlock better #FoodSystems outcomes for people, nature and climate.  Our first Impact Report captures just a snapshot of our efforts in our Phase II workstream and highlights the progress our community has made in driving collective #ActionOnFood at scale. Currently, the framework for measuring #SDG progress contains 13 indicators for #ZeroHunger and malnutrition, none of which measure the quality of diets. In a world where 1/3 of the population cannot afford a healthy diet and roughly 600 million people are projected to face chronic undernourishment by 2030, adding a new indicator for dietary diversity is a "no-brainer" in ensuring #GoodFood4All, urges Ty Beal, Senior Technical Specialist at the Global Alliance for Improved Nutrition (GAIN). Women account for 43% of the global agricultural labour force, and play an outsized role in sustaining the health and nutrition of households worldwide. Yet despite their central role in ensuring #GoodFood4All, women farmers receive just 10% of total aid for agriculture, forestry and fisheries, and a mere 5% of all agricultural extension services globally. As leaders turn their sights to building #NaturePositive #FoodSystems at #COP16 in Colombia, it is vital that they keep an equal focus on removing the barriers that women face in accessing land, resources, finance, markets, technology and employment opportunities further up the value chain, highlights Morgan Gillespy in a new interview with El Espectador's Silvia Corredor Rodríguez. "My daughter just turned six and I want to be an example to her of what we can achieve as women. That we can support each other and lift each other up, that we can be mothers, daughters, sisters and partners, as well as leaders, entrepreneurs, policy makers and innovators. Did you know Kenya loses over 9 million tons of food yearly, while nearly 20 million people face food insecurity? 🌽 This urgent challenge calls for collective action to combat food loss and waste (FLW). Our Food Program is working with government and private sector partners to standardize FLW measurement for more effective solutions. This collaboration marks a significant step forward in combating FLW. 🥑 This effort supports SDG Target 12.3, which aims to "halve per capita global food waste and reduce food losses along supply chains" by 2030. #FoodLossFoodWaste #FoodSecurity #SDG12

Today we had a very fruitful workshop at Movenpick Hotel and Residences Nairobi, bringing together all stakeholders drawn from Government, Academia, NGOs, Farmers, Businesses, Researchers, FAO, Private sector, CBOs, other development partners, among others on Food Loss and Food Waste Measurement Sensitization. The outcomes of the workshop were: 1. increased awareness and knowledge on FLW protocol and guidelines, 2. enhanced understanding of the need to measure and act against FLW, 3. increased willingness of businesses to participate in the protocol piloting exercise and 4. developed a roadmap for piloting FLW assessment in selected value chains developed (maize, potatoes, mangoes, avocados, bananas, fish). We look forward to generating accurate data on FLW in Kenya for the selected value chains and beyond and target to reduce our FLW by 50% by 2030
