The Red, White, Blue and Generous As we observe our nation’s 247th anniversary with picnics, barbecues, fireworks and other fun, let us also celebrate the amazing American tradition of sharing and caring for one another.  This uplifting spirit was documented as far back as 1831 by the French sociologist and political theorist Alexis de Tocqueville who studied and wrote about America’s inspiring sense of community. Today we can be proud of our philanthropic leadership evidenced by a record $557 billion in private giving with 67% coming from individual donors.  Philanthropy is more than the sharing of money -- it is the voluntary giving of time, talent and treasure.  About 25% of the adult population enthusiastically volunteers for their favorite non-profits, enabling our 1.5 million non-profits to touch, improve and save more lives, especially helping those who are struggling, with much more outreach and effectiveness than would otherwise be possible. Independent Sector estimates the value of a volunteer hour at $33.49.  The giving of time and money go hand-in-hand with it much more likely when a person contributes one, they will contribute the other.

Political giving is less than 2% of all charitable donations. Elections can actually boost awareness of civic duty, leading to increased charitable donations. Stay the course: - Mail fall appeals in September/October and end-of-year appeals before Thanksgiving or early December. - Inspire donors with thank-yous, stories, and impact reports. - Ensure timely thank-you letters, calls, and emails, especially to first-time donors. - Continue soliciting via email until New Year’s Eve. According to a report published by the Association of Fundraising Professionals, individuals are putting their donation where their emotion is, especially after a major political event --- like, say, a contentious presidential election. This flood of lower-dollar, first-time philanthropy has been dubbed "rage giving." Don't be caught off guard. Create a timely and relevant message that offers people an outlet for making a real, tangible difference in the causes that matter most, perhaps in spaces where folks feel their values are not being heard.
