Congratulations to all the #pharmacy students that have graduated over the following few days! 🥳🥳🥳 So, what now?......🤔🤔🤔 .... ... ... What an amazing milestone and achievement for all of you future pharmacy leaders and innovators, moving on from university to pharmacy internship! I remember when I was a wee graduate, leaving the harrowed halls of the uni, with a twinkle in my eye 😆. I had NO idea where I was going to take my career, I didn't even have the confidence to say that I wanted to pursue pharmacy itself.... I know sad right??? 😕😕😕 But I 100% understand the perspective I had is extremely common amongst a vast majority of pharmacy students, as they transition over to the "real world" of being a pharmacist. It can be scary, a sense of uncertainty will creep up on you, but it does not have to be that way! 😱😱😱 Throughout your internship, you preceptors are a core fundamental asset that ideally guide you and be your helping hand, keeping you on the right path to success! However, in action, it seams that this isn't really the case... let's be honest... People are busy, and life is even busier! That is why, I refuse to let any Australia pharmacy intern to be left behind, missing out and not having a fair go at being the best pharmacist they can be! So I have formed a community through "PharmacyDownUnder" to be a sanctuary (of sorts!) for: 1) Pharmacy Students 📚 2) Pharmacy Interns 🥼 3) Registered Pharmacists 💊 It is in essence a melding pot of ideas and perspectives, with collaboration and growth, both clincally and professionally, being the heart of it all! As I glanced through my phone, a particular picture caught my attention, transporting me back to my undergraduate days. During my industrial training at the University of Medical Sciences (UNIMED) in Ondo State, I had the privilege of completing a six-month internship. The memory of receiving my acceptance letter still brings tears of joy to my eyes, a moment I will forever cherish. I am deeply grateful to the then Heads of Department of Science Laboratory Technology (SLT), Chemistry, and Laboratory Technologist for this invaluable opportunity. My time at UNIMED was profoundly enriching. I worked alongside B.Sc. students on various projects, diving into the fascinating world of research. Our practical sessions were rigorous, filled with readings and meticulous observations. One notable experience was collaborating with a chemistry student on extraction techniques using a rotary evaporator and Soxhlet apparatus. Achieving our goals required persistence and patience, but it was immensely rewarding. I gained hands-on experience with several pieces of equipment, including the UV spectrophotometer, rotary evaporator, fume cupboard, and more. As my internship neared its end, with just two months remaining, I felt a surge of confidence and accomplishment. I was elated at my newfound ability to operate numerous instruments and conduct comprehensive research. Lessons Learned: 1) Openness to Learning: Acknowledging my weaknesses allowed me to seek guidance from staff and students more knowledgeable than myself. This humility and willingness to learn were crucial for my growth. 2) Networking, Opportunities, and Human Capital: I made significant connections with high-profile individuals, explored various opportunities, and pushed myself beyond my perceived limits. 3) Value System: Through this experience, I became more valuable in my field, enhancing both my skills and my professional worth.

⭐️ For my Pharmacy juniors: Tips from a Fresh Grad Just landed a community pharmacy internship? Congrats! It's an amazing way to gain practical experience and see the world of pharmacy firsthand. But let's be honest, it can feel overwhelming at times. Here are some tips from my own experience to help you not just survive, but thrive during your internship: 💊 Be a Sponge (But Also Ask Questions): Absorb everything you can! Observe workflows, learn dispensing procedures, and listen to patient interactions. Don't be afraid to ask questions – pharmacists are there to guide you. 💊 Initiative is Key: Show your eagerness to learn. Take the initiative to stock shelves, organize medications, or offer to research drug interactions. It demonstrates your commitment and proactiveness. 💊 Communication is King: Actively listen to patient concerns and learn how to explain medications effectively. Soft skills are crucial in pharmacy! ️ 💊 Embrace Teamwork: A pharmacy is a team environment. Learn from preceptors, build rapport with other interns, and collaborate effectively. Teamwork makes the dream work (and keeps things running smoothly)! 💊 Don't Forget the Books: While practical experience is invaluable, keep your knowledge base strong. After countless efforts and setbacks, I finally landed my first internship at Research and diagnostic lab of Al-Tibri medical college. I'm thrilled, and my heart is racing with excitement. With a confident smile, I stepped into the lab, thinking I knew everything. I was eager to apply my theoretical knowledge to perform practical tasks. But, reality hit me hard - it's much tougher to survive in a lab setting with only theoretical knowledge. When my instructor asked me about gram staining, my brain went blank. I had done it multiple times in my department's lab, but I realized I needed more practice. Handling was my next challenge. I spent 2 hours practicing micropipette handling with different calibers, despite this my instructor recommended daily practice of just 15 minutes for perfection. Despite the initial struggles, I'm excited for the future. I'm learning that lab work requires: 1)Patience 2)Practice 3)Dedication I'm ready to embrace this journey, learn from my mistakes, and grow as a professional.
