What did you think of this year’s Super Bowl commercials? Are there any that stood out? I had two favorites: Beyoncé’s Verizon Ad, and Jeremy Renner’s Silk ad (worked on by our producer Mike Zielinski!). In a world where AI may soon replace all film, celebrities still hold incredible wait. The way that these commercials addressed real-life events (the Barbie Movie, Jeremy’s accident), means that this moment is one of the few times when we feel connected in our media consumption. As we all drift more and more into our own “echo-chambers”, there are few things that we’ve all seen anymore. As weird as it sounds, a shared cultural touchpoint might be the biggest benefit to something as silly as expensive commercials. For one moment a year, we all watch the same thing and can talk about it. The rest of the year? I think this Head & Shoulders ad is incredible, and likely wildly effective, and I probably should've written something about it ages ago. But it just came on during the football, so here goes: - It's empathetic, built around the very neat insight that "having" dandruff can't be embarrassing if do something about it. Therefore, the product isn't "for people with dandruff", because as soon as you use it, that's not you. - It's entertaining, leaning into cinema tropes in a silly way that earns and keeps attention. - It's memorable, with a core line that contains the main product keyword as a recall trigger. - It ends with a catchy AF musical number that further embeds the core line and doesn't overstay its welcome. Not the coolest category, not the most earth-shattering creative, but utterly brilliant. And if I had dandruff (I don't...), I know what product would come to mind next time it irritated me. #advertising #insight #strategy #effectiveness

Here's one small thing we can do to make products stand out. Use plain backgrounds. The packet of crisps that you see in this spec ad has such colorful packaging. I planned to highlight that but had to keep the fun element balanced. The music (added later) would push the fun part, so instead of going with a colorful background - I chose a plain black one. Most of this is also learned intuition. The black background lets us focus more on what's happening with the product.
