Yesterday marked the start of our inaugural Social Work Awareness Week. The initiative was sponsored by the Social Work Employers Forum who have come together to address shared and well-recognised challenges in the field of Social Work. To date we have senior representation from Tusla, DCEDIY, HSE, Bernardos, the Probation Service, the Disability Federation, the IASW and FORSA. We also have excellent participation and representation from across the education sector. Our shared goal is to address the big issues facing social work in Ireland, starting with the insufficient pool of social workers nationally and the related issues of recruitment and retention. We recognise that to progress matters effectively, there are many moving parts and the issues are multidimensional. These include attracting more school-leavers onto relevant programmes, making post-graduate programmes attractive for more mature entrants, addressing issues regarding practice placements, and enabling a more diverse pool of Social Workers by broadening pathways to Social Work. Efforts by individual employers, no matter how creative and ‘successful’, only result in moving social work vacancies from one agency to another. We know and firmly believe that there are additional, positive and effective steps that can be taken. We want to maximise our collective joined-up approach, to build on what is already being done, as well as identifying gaps and joining together to address them. This collective, systemic approach is what is most likely to really unlock the solutions to the challenges we all face. Ultimately Social Workers will choose to work in their area of preference, our role is to ensure we are producing the correct numbers and enabling this hugely important profession to deliver the best possible outcomes in positive work cultures. There are very major challenges in the world, this is one we can solve collectively. A big #Thankyou to all employers involved, the education sector represented, #IASW #VivianGeiran whose reports have prompted this initiative for many years, the career guidance counsellors who attended yesterday, transition year students, speakers and panelists including #GerBrophy #ClareMurphy #KateDuggan #BernardGloster #PatrickODea #PreciousMatumba #ClaraOsheaCollins #DrCarolineCullen #DrKatrionaOSullivan #DesDelaney #KimHayes #DeborahSmullen #MichelleRichardson #SuzanneConnolly #MuireannNiRaghallaigh #EleanorKelly #DrJohannaoshea #DrSimoneMcCaughren #DrEleanorBantryWhite #ChrisCully #KateMiskella #AlanBreen #AnneBrennan #FrancesHaigney #ElaineMcGrane Finally thank you to all #SocialWorkers working to make a positive difference in lives and communities everyday. #supply #recruitment #retention #SocialWork #WorkwithPurpose #RodericOGorman #SimonHarris #NormaFoley #UCC #UCG #TCD #ATUSligo #TUS #UCD #CavanInstitute #MaynothUniversity #Bernardos #TUSLA #HSE #DisabilityFederationofIreland #Probation

Happy Social Work Month! March brings with it not just the promise of spring, but also the annual celebration of National Social Work Month. This year, the theme, "Empowering Social Workers!" resonates deeply, highlighting the crucial role social workers play in our communities and the importance of fostering their education and development. Social workers are heroes on the frontlines, continually advocating for and empowering individuals, families, and communities facing complex challenges. From mental health struggles to poverty, child welfare to addiction, they navigate intricate systems, providing support, resources, and a voice for those who might otherwise go unheard. Why is Social Work Month so important? Social workers make a tangible difference: Every day, they improve lives by connecting individuals with essential services, promoting social justice, and advocating for change. Their impact ripples across society, tackling some of the most pressing issues we face. The need is growing: Social workers are in high demand, yet the profession faces challenges like understaffing and safety concerns. By supporting education and development initiatives, social workers and their supporters can ensure a strong, empowered workforce equipped to meet the rising needs. Your voice matters: Social Work Month is an opportunity to raise awareness and advocate for the profession. You can participate by sharing stories of the important work you do, or share stories of how other social workers have impacted your life or inspired you. Supporting organizations that provide scholarships and training are also great ways to participate. The Importance of Social Work Education: A strong foundation in social work education is critical to empowering future changemakers. These programs equip students with the knowledge, skills, and values needed to navigate complex social systems, build relationships, and advocate effectively. By supporting accessible and diverse educational pathways, we can ensure a future where social workers are well prepared to tackle the challenges of tomorrow. It's a tough challenge, especially with budget cuts, but it's essential for maintaining social justice." Abyd Quinn Aziz "In the US, social work has become such a big business. March is National Social Work Month where social workers are celebrated for their hard work. ABC12 in Michigan spoke with Samantha Dutton who is an Associate Dean of Social Sciences at the University of Phoenix in their online news story "National Social Work Month recognizes the profession". In the news story, Samantha Dutton talks about how much work social work is and how necessary the work is. She said "The Bureau of Labor Statistics has us grow between 7 and 12 percent over 10 years, so there's lots of need for social worker." From what I see, there is a lot of room for social work in places like schools. The students at schools have a lot of needs that are not met by their regular teachers. The main problem is that a lot of the schools and programs do not have the money to support the programs or the staff. If there was more support there, there may be more people who want to do social work. It is a great profession and students need social work. But the schools and programs have to help the staff help the students. https://lnkd.in/eYJeR9V2

Did you know that March is Social Worker Month? The demand for social work is soaring, with numerous states experiencing shortages in social workers and mental health service providers. Social workers play a pivotal role in tackling pressing national issues, such as catering to the needs of our aging population, aiding individuals affected by the ongoing opioid addiction crisis, and assisting people in securing affordable housing and adequate healthcare. That’s why we are highlighting our valued social work students, faculty, alumni, and staff this March during Social Work Month 2024. The National Association of Social Workers' theme for Social Work Month 2024, "Empowering Social Workers," emphasizes the urgent necessity for our nation to enhance support systems for social workers to effectively address societal challenges.
