wicket Gates In hydroelectric power plants, wicket gates are often installed in the turbine's intake section. They control the amount of water entering the turbine, thereby regulating the power output of the generator. By adjusting the wicket gates, operators can optimize energy production based on factors like water flow, demand, and environmental conditions.

#pumpedstorage for #hydropower in the United States was built primarily between 1960 and 1990; nearly half of the pumped storage capacity still in operation was built in the 1970s. No new pumped storage projects have come online in the United States since 2012. However, three new projects have been proposed, one in Utah and two in California, with a combined capacity of 2.6 GW. These projects would be a significant addition to the 22 GW of current pumped storage capacity. The largest operating facility is the Bath County Pumped Storage Station in Virginia where six turbines combine for 2.9 GW of generating capacity. http://spr.ly/6049beyfL

Along the rotational axis of Kaplan turbines, water flows both in and out (axial flow). The ability of the blades to alter their angle on demand to ensure optimal efficiency for varying water flow rates is what distinguishes Kaplan turbines.[2] Because a Kaplan turbine loses pressure when water passes through it, it is a reaction turbine—much like a Francis turbine. These turbines have a big opening for water, which is the same size as the area taken up by the blades. Kaplan turbines are particularly effective in areas with high water flow rates because to their vast surface area; they can even be employed in dams with relatively low head.
