The topic of #hydroelectric #energy #production finds constraints that can be linked to the management of incoming water flows, especially if related to events which, as a consequence of #climate #change, can also be extreme and therefore with a high return period.
I propose here an extract from an ICOLD publication from 1988, where the "operating fields" of the hydroelectric plant are shown, considering that flows are turbined to produce energy or are discharged through spillways and outlets as the incoming flow increases, whose value tends towards the maximum flow rate (P.M.F.)
On the graph, the straight line that connects the points 0-1-3-4 relates to an ordinary operation water level.
Then, considering the #management of the #reservoir between points 0'-2-3-4'-4-5: for flow rates lower than QdR the management is ordinary, and the reservoir level can increase, while if the flow rates are higher than QdR, the level of the reservoir is lowered through the discharges, although at a certain flow rate the level could tend to increase until considerations can be made about dam safety.
As can be seen in the proposed example, in Field III energy production is possible for 88.5% of the duration curve, Field II guarantees 11% production and finally Field IV also allows a residual part of energy production.
