Happy International Women in Engineering Day!
Although my current role is far from matrix algebra, differential equations, vector calculus, etc, I strongly believe that an engineering background can be highly advantageous in a procurement role for several reasons:
✅ Technical Understanding: I find it straightforward to grasp product specifications and essential technical standards
✅ Problem Solving: I thrive when I have to solve a problem and statistically it is proven that engineers have strong problem-solving skills
✅ Optimization: Engineering skills can help optimize procurement processes to reduce costs and improve efficiency
✅ Innovation and Adaptability: Engineers independent of the role stay ahead of emerging technologies, which can inform procurement strategies and decisions.
When I was immersed in advanced math and engineering classes at Illinois Institute of Technology together with André Rehkopf Paulina Zharare, I never imagined that one day these skills would be saving the day in making sure our procurement processes are as smooth as they can be! Who knew Pythagoras had a side hustle in sourcing optimization?

23rd June is #INWED24 (International Women in Engineering Day). Launched by the Women's Engineering Society some 11 years ago, this annual celebration supports and encourages young women and girls to take up #engineering careers – and is clearly a worthwhile initiative (2021 figures indicate that in the UK, just 16.5% of engineers are women).
These global initiatives, in all industry sectors, are vital for our future. We know that women in technical roles are hugely under-represented; bringing awareness to this, whilst promoting the various roles that exist is a step towards encouraging women to be bold and follow the career path of their choosing, whatever the challenges along the way.
