I met a Management Trainee yesterday. He said, 'You must follow your passion.' I looked at my bank balance and fixed expense sheet, including EMI, and replied, 'I am already following my passion.' 𝙄 𝙬𝙖𝙨 𝙖𝙡𝙬𝙖𝙮𝙨 𝙖 𝙜𝙤𝙤𝙙 𝙨𝙩𝙪𝙙𝙚𝙣𝙩 𝘽𝙐𝙏 ............... Since young, studying and scoring in exams have never something difficult for me. It comes naturally to me, even if I don't like the syllabus, I'll make sure I score on that paper. 😌 Everything was perfect. More like, I just went with the flow, not knowing what's next. 🤓 Then I stepped into Form 5 (last year of secondary-level studies in Malaysia)and people asked me to decide what I wanted to be, it just didn't make sense to me.😕 How am I supposed to decide!? 🤷🏽♀️ I've no idea what I was supposed to do. I've always carried the best student image, top scorer, etc. but I didn't know what I wanted to be.😧 Instead of figuring it out, I quickly signed up for an accounting course after my SPM just because my friends wanted to be an accountant. I just followed them. 😅 I never did accounts during SPM but I just followed. 🫣 Along the way, as usual, I maintained a CGPA of 3.8+ and continued with my degree and ACCA only to realize working 9 to 5 might not be my thing after going through an internship. 🤧 I loved the job, but not the environment.😪 There was just one more year for me to complete my degree and ACCA and I was super confused about what to do next. 😟 I thought I figured it out but seemed like I didn't. If not 9 to 5, what's for me then?🤧 So many questions, however, I didn't take any action on them. Some contraversial thoughts shared in the SEB Uncharted Leadeship discussion yesterday on the topic "Develop NOT let them leave". 📣 When we as employers and managers try to "safeguard" investment in people we sometimes forget that "trainees" are investing probably more than we do. They have chosen to ally themselves with us-as-a-company, us-as-a-profession and us-as-managers. By choosing US they have said NO to hundreds of other companies and also decided to use their personal and family time to learn things that only WE need them to learn. That commitment is both mental and financial and should not be questioned. Thats the soft part:) 📣 On the hard side - business needs return on investment and training budget is not excluded. So, one tactic is to cut losses early. If we see that a colleague "is not cutting it", it's better to stop wasting his/her energy and our time on training the untrainable. Earlier is cheaper than later. We can then "divert the investment" into the next one, actually doing a favor to everyone, including the "untrainable". 📣 Now, back to the soft side. Did you know that some ministries in Lithuania see "public-to-private" talent drain as a GOOD thing. No hard feelings to train people in the public sector and give them away for the business to profit. The underlying thinking is that the country overall still benefits. Can you as a manager (or as a business) also apply this thinking to your efforts to train and let go?
