How do you build a company culture that creates a secure organizational foundation with the patient at the center? At Daiichi Sankyo Nordics, we decided to define the culture we want by involving everyone. We invited our colleagues to literally build their aspirations of our company culture, brick by brick. The clearly defined culture aspiration has been a game-changer for us. But let’s be clear: our culture, though modeled with Lego bricks, is far from being a mere child's game. We aspire to have an ongoing Culture Movement, charged with the mission to actively organize activities that breathe life into our culture—making sure it stands robust and interconnected, just like a well-planned Lego structure.

Stories can really bring a company's values and identity to life, creating a sense of belonging among employees and reinforcing cultural norms. For example, at our company, we often share stories that highlight our core values in action. Cultural differences create unexpected reactions. Although the Nordic corporate culture relies on the independence and trust of individual people, more competitive societies drive further with a strict hierarchy. The corporate brand must anticipate all these differences and put all members on a solid ground with common values and rules. The universal brand is the framework of the corporate culture. It creates the right dynamic, gives focus and sense of collaboration. It also courage to follow a common culture with tasks, clients and colleagues. Based on the framework of the brand identity and its promises, the company's processes are managed in detail. This ensures the expected touch points. But leaves space enough for individuals to give their own personal touch in the details. This way individuals find their role as part of the brand community, as employees, stakeholders and customers. The brand is the user interface. It offers understanding beyond cultural differences. It makes individuals equal and give them a common path to the future. Sometimes I remember a situation in the 1980ies. Sitting in the foyer there have been two company meetings in parallel in the same hotel. BMW (automotive) and KRUPP (steel) had summoned their managers for a meeting. As uninvolved observer you could see at once to which company each belong, just looking on the the way they talk, behave, be dressed, smile on the face, ... Corporate culture have a significant impact on the employees, corporate culture is the sum of the behavior of the employees. A great workplace culture can be developed and built. It can be deliberately designed, and there are numerous tools including the #EmotionalCultureDeck by riders&elephants which I love! It is also built through each interaction, the language used, the humanity displayed in the workplace. Early in my career I came to realise that people notice every little nuance. They notice when you greet one person but not the other next to them, they notice the slights and microaggressions, the put downs. Those all negatively impact culture. They also notice the positive, but not as much because people have a negativity bias, so we need a ratio of around 6 positive to each negative. A great culture is indeed when everyone is treated with dignity, respect, compassion and kindness. It is also whether they feel those and how they feel each morning getting ready for work. Coaching is great for self leadership, as well as leading others. Give it a go!
