"We're more than the sum of our challenges." That's the powerful message from Amy in this Ted Talk, "Changing The Way We Talk About Disability." Amy shares her candid insights on the misconceptions and stereotypes that often cloud our understanding of disability. From backhanded compliments like "You're stylish for someone in a wheelchair" to societal limitations, Amy's talk is an eye-opener. She urges us to look beyond the wheelchair and see the person first. Her life is a testament to this – backpacking through Southeast Asia, thriving in her career as a graphic designer, and living experiences many only dream of. Amy's journey isn't defined by her wheelchair; it's marked by her unyielding spirit and determination. Watch this video and listen to Amy breaking down barriers, one story at a time. It's not just about changing perceptions; it's about recognising that we are all people with dreams, aspirations, and the right to a life without labels. https://lnkd.in/eXWhvVas #BreakTheStereotypes #DisabilityAwareness #EDS #BeyondTheWheelchair

Topics of discussion include reps for seniors in every Ward office, finalizing a senior tenants' bill of rights, creating a Chicago department on aging (you read that right: there is none), consolidating and expanding all interior and exterior home repair services, establishing local grocery stores and health clinics on the south and west sides, and more!

Ria Gualano is a doctoral student in communication studying the communication of disability under the guidance of CALS professor Lee Humphreys, Ph.D. Ria’s goal is to generate avenues for making social spaces more inclusive by highlighting community perspectives. "It is important to contribute to advocacy work and larger movements that shift the spotlight to personal experiences instead. My hope is to provide a platform for others with disabilities and neurodiverse experiences to share their stories and work to rewrite our communities’ narratives, at the local level and beyond." https://lnkd.in/e6fNNCYz
