Did you know that heat is a leading cause of death worldwide due to climate related disasters, with 5 million deaths every year? At Tetra Tech’s 2024 technology incubator, the Tech1000.AIChallenge, The Heat Squad, made up of 13 global Tetra Tech specialists including nine from RPS’ Asia Pacific business pitched an innovative and scalable solution to the dangers of urban heat islands by leveraging the smarts of artificial intelligence (AI). Despite stiff competition, with over 700 participants, the pitch saw the team named runners up after an 8-week long contest. RPS’ Strategy Lead – Geospatial Solutions, Jonathan Smith says, “The judges and audience were really impressed by our submission and the solution we proposed. They immediately saw the value in this type of solution. Finally, a positive story about the UK's rivers! The 'world's first' ecological digital twin of a chalk stream. A collaboration between Microsoft, Anglian Water Services, and Avanade is helping build a digital twin of the River Stiffkey. Why the River Stiffkey? It remains one of only 300 chalk streams in the world. One ambition is to unite multiple data sources in a "connected stack" to help digitally model a spatial river catchment map. Based on the data, simulations will then be run using AI. The project is supported by the Ofwat Innovation Fund - Water Breakthrough Challenge. Speaking from experience, it’s easy to see how unfettered access to data is the key for proper real-time decision making, post hoc performance evaluation, and foundational for meeting regulator requirements in our current energy paradigm.
