2 years ago I attended my first #oilandgas conference in Kuala Lumpur. Today, I'm presenting at one representing TechnipFMC. I have been blessed with the opportunity to present at our booth in Offshore Technology Conference Asia (OTC Asia) 2024. What's more exciting is I get to share a thing or two about our company's vision for New Energy into the future. Something I am very keen to see it go into full effect. If you like to know more about it, you can check the company website or attend one of my talks 🙊 . I would also like to share some things I #learned that helped me develop and been given this chance to showcase my talents. I hope this would benefit future #young #engineers in the their own respective careers. 1. Be brave! 💪 Take the #opportunities that were given to you. Sometimes the task, or the challenge is too great that you feel like it is impossible to do. To be scared is completely ok, you can do it while being scared. I was scared many times in my career. First project to handle alone. First time going offshore. First time presenting. I was scared, yet I did it anyway. You will be amazed how much you can #grow if you overcome that wall of fear. 2. Be persistent! 🏃♀️ I wanted to write #hardworking, but that is just not right. Being #persistent means you have to keep trying even if you think it's not going to work out. Sometimes you will fail such as delivering sloppy work quality or miss-said something at a technical meeting. And that's OK. Pick yourself back up, and keep trying, keep going, keep it up! 3. Be you! 👉 😲 Most important one. In the end make sure you are #happy with what you're doing. Public speaking might be something I like, but it could be something you abhor. Make sure you chase and do something that you like. Something that is true to who you are. Because you will grow and shine the most when you do something you like. There is no need to become like someone else, you just need to be you. These are just some of my tips to grow and develop not only as a young engineer, but a more #successful person in the end. p.s. if you're free 29th Feb 2024, I'll be presenting on New Energy Ventures at our booth in KL Convention Center 😄. Best regards, #NaimZafran

I would like to share my recent worst experience ever with Petrofac to caution anyone considering working with them, especially those looking for overseas roles. Around five months ago, I was selected for a Principal Engineer position. The hiring process took nearly three months, and while it was extremely lengthy & hectic. I initially remained patient as things seemed to be moving forward. However, once everything was supposedly finalized, the company became unresponsive even after visa issuance more than a month. Despite many follow-ups and emails, it became clear that Petrofac had decided not to proceed with mobilizing me, without any explanation or communication. This sudden decision caused significant professional and financial setbacks for me, putting me in a tough situation. I would never recommend Petrofac as an employer, as they have shown no true values and lack transparency. Their decisions, made without considering the candidate’s time and effort, can result in severe career loss. I urge anyone considering this company not to quit their current job based on an offer from #Petrofac, as they can back out at any moment without providing solutions or compensations. This has been one of the worst experiences of my professional life, and I hope this serves as a warning to others to avoid facing similar challenges. The company has poor management, weak decision making and unprofessional candidates handling. #Experience with Petrofac: Interview- 22 March 24 Job Offer received 2nd April Offer acceptance sent on 4th april Pre Employment Medical test Initiation 5th april Medical Appointment 15th April Medical Approval 22nd April 24 Employment confirmation 22nd April 24 Resignation notification to current employer from Petrofac 27th april HR on boarding process (April, may,June) Visa Approval notification from thailand 6th July Documentation received(Hard doc) from Petrofac thailand for visa application Ticket & Hotel reservation for Visa application 17th July Visa Issuance 2from Agency 26th July Revised Plan 27th July- CHANGED Mobilization PLAN to 5th Sept AUGUST- Silence- No response for travel plan SEPT- Silence-No response for travel plan Second Interview for another country relocation 7th August Interview feedback - Silence- No response till 16th September 24. Mrinal Roy "Having graduated as a Civil Engineer in 1972, I initially wanted to pursue a career in engineering and joined a construction company. While I learned real “engineering”, I was unsatisfied with my job and looked around for a change. After about four years, I got the opportunity to join Indian Oil Corporation as a Management Trainee. Although I was already an Assistant Executive Engineer, a rung above the bottom, in a Public Sector Construction company, I took the jump and joined as a Trainee. This was perhaps the turning point in my career. From a Trainee in 1976 to Executive Director in 2005 of a Fortune 500 Company, most people would see it as a professional achievement. The fact that I was invited by the Public Selection Board of India, on two occasions, to appear for interviews for selection at the Board level of Indian Oil Corporation, makes me believe, in hindsight that my career in Indian Oil was indeed successful. Even before my retirement in 2011 from Indian Oil, I was offered the position of CEO by the national oil company of Malaysia, PETRONAS. After the conclusion of my contract with Petronas in 2016, I was approached by Beximco Group, Bangladesh to join them, as Chief Advisor, which I accepted in September 2016. After about two years as an Advisor, I was elevated to the position of CEO of Beximco petroleum Ltd. In the corporate world, everybody must retire one day. Most of my colleagues and friends who have hung up their boots post-retirement, aged fast, lost the sharpness of their minds, suffered innumerable ailments and were generally unhappy. It is my message to all – do not retire because this is the period of your life where you will be valued the most and enjoy your freedom in the true sense. With your skills honed over decades and your knowledge at its peak, there is great demand for you. Just let people know you are available. WisdomCircle is a great platform for the same." In today’s competitive landscape, poaching talent from competitors can seem like an efficient solution to fill workforce gaps quickly. But is this really the best long-term strategy for companies, or does it risk undermining the industry as a whole? 🤔 Take the recent case of SIA Engineering Company (SIAEC) hiring engineers from Malaysia Airlines. Yes, it strengthens SIAEC’s team immediately, but Malaysia Airlines is facing operational disruptions as a result. This raises an important question: Should companies rely on poaching, or focus more on developing their own talent? While poaching brings in experienced professionals fast, it can destabilize competitors, potentially hurting the broader regional ecosystem. On the other hand, investing in talent development - through partnerships with universities, training programs, and upskilling initiatives - builds a sustainable talent pipeline and fosters loyalty. I’m not saying poaching is inherently wrong - it’s part of open market dynamics. But it’s time we ask whether building capabilities from within is a more responsible way forward. In the aviation sector, this could mean nurturing new talent, enhancing skills, and ensuring long-term industry stability across borders. The real question is: Can we strike a balance between *competing for talent* and *developing it*? How do we grow without weakening those around us? What’s your take on this? Is poaching a necessary strategy, or should we focus more on talent development for sustainable growth? Let’s discuss! 💬👇 #TalentStrategy #BuildOrPoach #EthicalBusiness

Engineers Australia is very much aware of this conundrum for a long period of time and has been successfully lobbying employer organizations and other agencies. Engineers Australia in Create Digital monthly magazine and weekly E-News published a number of useful tip on regular basis. What pains me is that though there is a skills shortage, many employers are so obsessed with readymade engineers, rather than train talented experienced first-generation migrant engineers. I experienced similar fate, when I migrated to Australia in January 1991. I migrated to Australia, when it was going through deep recession. I was lucky enough in the sense that I was a young man and unmarried. My field of Water Engineering was high in demand and was able to secure job quickly. But I was confronted with same question in the interviews that "I don't have local experience, and I don't know Australian Standards". It is a very frustrating catch-22 experience. It still reminds me as if it was yesterday, despite more than 3.5 decades ago. Please follow the tips of Engineers Australia https://lnkd.in/gHZ-CMgM #Skillsshortage #migrantengineers #energetic #opportuities #networking #training #upskilling Australian Institute of Project Management (AIPM) IPMA: International Project Management Association Australian Water Association International Water Association #conundrum
