Chain pharmacists often struggle with providing real patient care due to several systemic challenges. Firstly, they face significant time constraints. Pharmacists in these settings are often required to fill high volumes of prescriptions quickly, leaving little time for patient consultations and personalized care. Secondly, the business model of chain pharmacies prioritizes efficiency and profitability over individualized patient care. This model focuses on rapid prescription processing and sales targets, which can undermine the quality of patient interactions. Additionally, chain pharmacies typically operate under stringent corporate policies and standardized procedures that limit the flexibility and discretion pharmacists need to address unique patient needs. These policies can restrict pharmacists from offering tailored advice and interventions that could significantly benefit patients. Lastly, there is often a lack of adequate staffing. Many chain pharmacies operate with minimal staff, placing an enormous burden on the available pharmacists and technicians. This understaffing exacerbates the inability to provide thorough patient care, as the available personnel are stretched too thin to go beyond basic dispensing duties. In summary, the emphasis on efficiency, profitability, rigid corporate policies, and insufficient staffing are key reasons why chain pharmacists struggle to deliver comprehensive patient care.

ePMA: Safer prescribing for our patients 🏥 Following on from the good news that the Electronic Prescribing and Medicines Administration (ePMA) system went live across the ED and Urgent Care settings at West Cumberland Hospital in February, Daniel Ivison, Lead Clinical Pharmacist - Electronic Prescribing, reflects on the impact this has had on colleagues and patients. 💬 "The ePMA system is a digital software program used to detail prescription information, as well as medication histories, ordering of medicines and recording when drugs have been administered. This project is about replacing the current paper based system with software that is fit for the digital age we are living in, meaning our prescribing and medicines administration will be done digitally. We’ll be leaving behind paper medicines charts and prescriptions on our acute adult inpatient wards and A&E departments; paper charts will be a thing of the past. The go-live at WCH progressed well with system adoption and positive engagement from all. It was a great team effort from clinical staff, the ePMA team, digital, communication and pharmacy teams. There has been an incredible collaborative effort across multiple teams to piece the puzzle together and ensure that the system works seamlessly in the context of existing clinical processes and with other digital systems currently in-place across the Trust. Colleagues have quickly got up to speed with the new system and have been satisfied with the benefits it offers. We have found that even the most apprehensive staff members have been surprised by how easy the system is to use and how quickly it has become ingrained into their daily routines, fully appreciating the benefits of digital prescribing over paper-based processes." #ePMA
