China bullying in international waters. Is ASEAN not going to make a stand on keeping international waterways safe for free passenger and trade passage? Rouge bullying in one of the busiest routes in the world can't be tolerated. ASEAN has to have the courage to make a united stand to protect this valuable route. Seems China doesn't want to subscribe to the New China-ASEAN Code of Conduct.

How many people died on flight 516 in Japan? Zero! Why? Through pure display of discipline. Japanese are concerned for their lives as much as anyone else, but they still maintained strict discipline and followed the emergency evacuation procedures. Nothing can be a greater display of culture than what we witnessed. All 379 people onboard were evacuated safely and looking at the picture, it’s hard to imagine. Japanese cultural values are deeply ingrained in their society which can be seen here or during the recent earthquake as well plus who can forget Japanese crowd in a World Cup match cleaning and picking up rubbish in the stadium after the match. Kudos to them. I have worked in a Japanese organization and have witnessed similar acts and behaviors on a daily basis. Japanese culture is often associated with the concept of ‘gaman’ which is the idea that individuals should show patience, perseverance and resilience in all difficult situations without complaints. We can all learn a lot from Japanese culture.

Taimoor Khan 's post on Japanese culture included the term Gaman. 👇 " Gaman (我慢) is a widely used Japanese cultural concept.[1] The term means "enduring the seemingly unbearable with patience and dignity".[2] The idea is often translated as "perseverance" or "patience". Gaman implies a kind of hard work which is defined by Japanese culture. Gaman is a passive term. It focuses on no complaints in the process of working with others. It contrasts with an active process.[3] History The term Gaman first appeared in Japan as a teaching of Zen Buddhism.[4] After the 2011 Tōhoku earthquake and tsunami, gaman was one of the most commonly heard expressions . " https://lnkd.in/gu2N7Q8G. Thanks Taimoor.

Great insight by the original author. Culture can be the difference between life and death, success or failure. This post summarizes this point very well.

Zero casualties occurred in the Flight 516 incident in Japan, exemplifying the power of discipline and the beauty of ‘Gaman’. Japanese religious beliefs and cultural values are the same. They are intertwined. Which is often described as a concept called ‘Gaman’. Gaman originated in Buddhist teachings about bettering oneself before gradually being shaped into a perseverance mechanism for individuals navigating membership of social groups. It was honed during Japan’s post-war economic boom when work took on the status of nation-building – meaning sacrificing time with family for long hours in the office. (Source BBC) Some see gaman-style perseverance as Japan’s defining feature. It’s the representative characteristic of Japanese people, but it has good and bad points. Self-monitoring and public expectations associated with Gaman are a contributory factor in Japan’s low crime rate. Where people watch out for each other and avoid conflict, everyone is more careful about their actions. Flight 516 in Japan exemplified the power of discipline and Gaman, the philosophy of patiently persevering in tough times. All 379 passengers were safely evacuated through strict adherence to emergency procedures, showcasing the deeply ingrained cultural values and religious beliefs of the Japanese. Kudos to the Japanese for embodying cultural strength, empathy, and the spirit of Gaman.

There is a magical quality about compasses going back to ancient times when Japanese and Chinese sailors used them as good luck Talismans, believing they would help them avoid frightening meetings with sea serpents and monsters, guaranteeing a safe return home. If you don’t want to encounter scary creatures on life’s journey, there are a few measures you can take to avoid getting off your track. https://lnkd.in/gFdsvEQt
