When selecting a variety denomination for plant variety protection at the #CPVO, ensuring that the denomination is not offensive or harmful in any language is a crucial step. This is part of a thorough evaluation process that safeguards against linguistic and cultural misunderstandings. The CPVO’s experts conduct a detailed analysis of the proposed denomination in all official EU languages, checking for any meanings that may be inappropriate, offensive, or misleading in different regions. Article 63 of our Basic Regulation stipulates that variety denominations must not only be unique and distinguishable but must also avoid terms that might be confusing, offensive, or contrary to public policy. This involves researching the meaning of proposed names in various languages to ensure that they do not inadvertently cause harm or mislead consumers in any market. The goal is to ensure clarity and avoid issues such as false associations with the variety's characteristics or offensive meanings that could arise from local dialects or language nuances.     We are not even half way there and nationalism or poor funding of public services is often a barrier to multilingualism… But those who truely identify as European citizen share a goal of plural communities thriving together and that’s something that is worth celebrating. 🥳 I hope my kids will see that dream come true or at least not witness a step back. 🙏 Here in Portugal, language discrimination is still very high and I experience a lot of violent situations because of that, but these are all important learnings. I have gathered these learnings and prepared a curriculum for corporate training in the field of #internationalization over the last six months.     Learning a language is not just about words- it is about embracing the culture and traditions of a country. For the EU to become even more unified, it would be beneficial if anyone had equal access to learning English, as a common language can bridge gaps and strengthen our shared identity. While diversity is our strength, a shared language could help us communicate and collaborate more effectively across borders. There are still many citizens who don’t have the opportunity to learn English, and improving access could make a real difference.
