Among the 18 million veterans in the U.S., less than half are enrolled in VA healthcare, with only 6 million actively using these services. Jenn Kerfoot, a former Navy corpsman and current Chief Strategy & Growth Officer at DUOS, unpacks in a recent article featured on STAT the bureaucratic maze veterans face post-service, from shocking statistics to sobering realities. The suicide rate for veterans stands alarmingly at 72% higher than that of non-veteran adults, reflecting a deep and pressing need for better access to mental health and medical care. In the article, Jenn advocates for systemic changes to bridge this gap, including automatic VA enrollment for all honorably discharged veterans, streamlined communications between health agencies, and a simplification of the processes that currently hinder veterans from receiving the care they deserve. 🔗 Read the full article: https://lnkd.in/g7cm94Kv As part of our ongoing support for our veterans, DUOS is proud to partner with Humana in a newly launched initiative aimed at enhancing healthcare experiences through technology, improving access and outcomes. This meaningful partnership reaffirms our commitment and dedication to improving the well-being of our veteran communities. 🇺🇸 #VeteranHealth #VeteranCare #HonorOurVeterans #Veterans #Healthcare #SuicidePrevention

Respectfully, Your wait times are out of control. The bad actors and their actions as highlighted by the OIG have added to these wait times. Recommendations: Train and insist that your scheduling staff to automatically refer all appointments that cannot be scheduled within 30 days of the date #veterans attempt to schedule appointments. This simple action aligns with the spirit of the Maintaining Internal Systems and Strengthening Integrated Outside Networks (MISSION) Act.
It's my responsibility to provide the safest, highest-quality care to our #veterans and offer the best environment possible to our employees who provide that care. Below is my message to our team at the VA Eastern Colorado Health Care System following two separate reports from Department of Veterans Affairs, Office of Inspector General. Their investigations will help ensure Veterans, employees, and stakeholders have full confidence in the quality and integrity of the leaders and care delivery provided.

Big News for the Veteran Community: Veterans, military families, and supporters—critical updates could impact your benefits and access to care: VA Budget Shortfall: A $15 billion deficit threatens essential services. Rural Healthcare: New initiatives aim to improve care for the 4.7M veterans in rural areas. Legislative Efforts: Congress is pushing to protect benefits and secure a 2025 cost-of-living adjustment. These issues are crucial. If you feel the same, consider contacting your representative in Congress and the Senate. Let’s ensure the VA is properly funded and held accountable. Letter Template: Dear [Representative/Senator’s Name], I’m a [veteran/supporter] in [Your District/State], and I’m concerned about issues impacting veterans: 1. VA Budget Shortfall: The $15 billion deficit at the VA risks vital services. Congress must act to ensure veterans receive the support they’ve earned. 2. Rural Healthcare: 4.7 million veterans in rural areas need better access to healthcare. I support efforts to expand these services and urge you to advocate for them. 3. In a significant move for equality and recognition, the VA has waived over $2.5M in copayments for 3,800+ Native American veterans. This policy honors our treaties & addresses healthcare disparities. This is UNSAT and infuriates me. Trying to schedule an appointment is sometimes so difficult it’s easier to just deal with the issue. And to be honest Tricare is just as bad. The difficulty in scheduling or rescheduling an appointment has to change. These are my experiences with both VA and Tricare as they pertain to appointments: 1. There’s no appointments for over a month or two and they’re more than likely video appointments before in-person. 2. The website doesn’t allow for scheduling or rescheduling based upon the specialty. 3. You wait on hold for sometimes as long as an hour or more before someone answers the call, and even then, sometimes after waiting, I’m asked to hold or transferred or I get the answer germane to point 1 above. Is it inadequate staffing or inadequate technology? Is it updating systems without proper staff training before roll out? We need to do better. Reach out to your Representatives and Senators and let them know, repeatedly, that this is a problem.
🛑 Why so many Veterans meet their end in VA parking lots 🛑 Today, the VA canceled my appointment with 28 hours' notice, an appointment that took me months to work up the courage to make. This launched me into a bureaucratic nightmare. What followed was a maddening loop of transfers—from a nurse advice line (who couldn't make me an appointment anywhere else because of policy) to eligibility offices(who couldn't make the doctor change because of policy), and finally bounced between clinics without any resolution. This chaos is why we hear heartbreaking stories of veterans committing suicide in U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs parking lots. It's unacceptable. Our veterans deserve dignity and respect, not endless red tape and incompetence. We need a complete overhaul of the VA system—now. Our heroes can't wait. Tanya Bradsher, Shereef Elnahal, Kimberly J., Steven Lieberman, Michael Missal is this the legacy you all want to leave behind when you stop SERVING the Veterans who utilize the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs? #VeteransAffairs #VAHealthcare #SystemFail #DemandChange
