Hyfe has had a busy start to the year, but we're especially proud of our Hyfe Cough Science Forum held on February 14th! This was the first time we opened the event to the public, and we were delighted to welcome attendees from 16 different centers and institutions. What does it take to lose weight forever? What is unique about those who succeed? The answer is buried deep in the archives at the Weight Control and Diabetes Research Center in Providence, Rhode Island: The National Weight Control Registry, the largest database ever assembled on individuals successful at long-term maintenance of weight loss. I'll be discussing the NWCR research at the upcoming Southwest American College of Sports Medicine conference on October 25-26 in Irvine, California. My presentation, "Habits of Successful Weight Losers: The Research from the National Weight Control Registry," based on my book, Lose It Forever, reviews the NWCR's research to reveal the 6 habits of successful weight losers. I am beyond excited to announce the publication of my first edited collection (co-edited with Dr. Tom Ewing) titled "Challenging Stories: Exploring the Intersections Between Health and the Humanities." Here's the link: https://lnkd.in/eEi4yNFZ Abstract: Challenging Stories explores experiences of demanding health conditions and attitudes in response to them, across historical and contemporary contexts. This collection of original scholarship brings an interdisciplinary perspective to topics such as maternal health, care for aging adults, births by midwives, family planning, infectious disease outbreaks, biosafety health protocols, blood transfusions, and plant-based health practices. The case studies explored in each chapter contribute to a deeper and richer understanding of how challenging stories are embedded in an appreciation of community and individual health. Those interested in medical humanities and in challenging dominant medical narratives should definitely check it out! 🙂

Fellow physicians, what’s stopping us from taking enough time off- whatever that may be and realizing it’s different for each of us? Just the other day, I had a conversation with a GI doc who revealed he’s only taken 3 weeks off per year for the last 20 years. He’s thinking about, and really wants to take 12 weeks off this year. My take- do it! You only live once. Life is short and all of those cliches. It was awesomely beautiful to have witnessed this august occasion of Professor Alexander Yaw Debrah, who also happens to be the Dean of my Faculty (Faculty of Allied Health Sciences), as he gave his inaugural professorial lecture at the Great Hall of KNUST, Chaired by the VC, Professor (Mrs) Rita Akosua Dickson. As he recounted his story, he made a lot of inspiring statements which served as a motivation for the upcoming youngsters to grab the opportunities of today and solve problems that will bring great benefit to our society. He recalled the moment, when as a Masters' student, he asked his Professor a question who then responded: "I don't know but when you become a Professor of Parasitology one day, you can help answer that." These words motivated him to keep researching until he finds an answer. Standing in the auditorium yesterday, he smiled and boldly said: "Today, as a professor of Parasitology, I will answer that question now." Not only has he been able to answer the question, but also his research has thrown more light on Lymphatic Filariasis and River Blindness and has been able to bring out an effective drug to cure the disease. The impact of his research has spread far and wide in the scientific community today, receiving numerous awards and grants for further research. The world is full of problems, and one "little" problem solved may throw more light on other problems to be solved. It may look little and neglected today but when solved, it may end up as a great breakthrough tomorrow. Let's do our best to solve as many societal problems we can today! Who knows???

Shishehbor, DO, MPH, PhD, President, UH Harrington Heart & Vascular Institute, related to patients with chronic limb-threatening ischemia where our innovative approach of using transcatheter arterialization of the deep veins is saving lives and limbs. Dr. Shishehbor was deeply involved in developing this minimally invasive approach – which diverts the blood from the diseased arteries into the veins in the calf and gets oxygenated blood to the foot – and co-led the clinical trials showing that 76% of patients could avoid amputation and experience wound healing. After the New England Journal of Medicine published the results of these trials, the FDA approved the procedure.  #statmadness #healthcareexcellence #healthcareinnovation
