Exciting news from the Great Ormond Street Hospital for Children NHS Foundation Trust! 👶✨ We’re thrilled to hear about the incredible work being done to support Tomas, and proud to see the vital role the NIHR is playing in this clinical trial. 👏 Tomas received the treatment at our NIHR GOSH Clinical Research Facility and the trial's principal investigator is part of the NIHR GOSH Biomedical Research Centre. This collaboration is a powerful example of how research and healthcare go hand in hand to make a real difference in people's lives. 💙
We’re pleased to share that a baby boy born with a rare condition has become the first in the world to be treated with a new, potentially lifechanging, investigational gene therapy on a clinical trial at GOSH. 14-month-old Tomas was diagnosed with a rare genetic condition which causes ammonia to build up in the blood. This causes serious side effects as it is toxic, especially to the brain. Tomas took part in the OTC-HOPE clinical trial and received the gene therapy last year via an infusion into his liver cells. Since receiving the treatment, he has made good progress. Mum Mariana said: “We're so pleased Tomas was able to have the gene therapy - it's been incredible.” 💙 Find out more: https://lnkd.in/eeS_PUBN

This #WorldOralHealthDay, we celebrate the impact of the NIHR-funded BRUSH project which has driven change with its supervised toothbrushing programme 🦷 The government’s recent annoucement of £11 million funding for supervised toothbrushing programmes across England follows extensive research by our NIHR ARC Yorkshire and Humber & PenARC (NIHR ARC South West Peninsula). With 1 in 5 children aged 5 affected by tooth decay in England, with higher rates in more deprived areas. The consequences extend beyond oral pain, impacting children's diet, speech, quality of life, and confidence. Tooth decay treatment is the leading cause of hospital admissions for young children (33,000+ annually), costing the NHS over £40 million each year. The expansion of these programmes will not only improve children's oral healthcare and reduce health inequalities but also save £3 in avoided treatment costs for every £1 spent, amounting to over £34 million in savings over the next 5 years. Did you know before 2013 there were no vaccines to protect against Meningitis B, a leading infectious killer among young children? Supported by multiple NIHR career development awards, Dr Hannah Christensen’s influential work critically informed the national introduction of a life-saving vaccine to protect children under 5. This research not only saved lives but also reduced costs to the NHS by £136 million annually. Find out more athttps://lnkd.in/eyqDaUD6

NIHR (National Institute for Health and Care Research) reposted this
Southampton father Ardel Richardson is helping to shape a better future for his daughter ❤️ He has joined a ground-breaking NIHR (National Institute for Health and Care Research) programme at University Hospital Southampton NHS FT to improve health in Black communities. People from Black ethnic backgrounds have historically been under-represented in health studies. This means knowledge and treatments as a result of research are predominantly based on white populations. The new programme is looking to “close the gap” and create a healthier future for all. Ardel is featuring in a UHS press release that will be appearing on screens and airwaves from today. Watch to hear why Ardel got involved and how he hopes this research will make a difference 📽️👇 https://lnkd.in/etcRc5r2

NIHR funded research is changing lives and creating a more efficient NHS through better care for pregnant women with diabetes. Here’s what we've achieved: ✅ Healthier babies and fewer complications ✅ £9.5 million in annual NHS savings ✅ 98% of pregnant women with type 1 diabetes now offered continuous glucose monitoring Each year, around 2,500 babies in the UK alone are born to women with type 1 diabetes.
