The Slovenian start-up ReCatalyst and the German spin-off company ionysis GmbH, collaborating on the development of next-generation #fuelcells as part of the ENABLER project funded by the European Innovation Council, have made significant progress in their technical development.   On the one hand, ReCatalyst has developed a new generation of #fuelcell #catalyst #materials based on mesoporous carbons, for which a production patent has also been filed. Using these novel materials, the ionysis team has successfully developed full-format fuel cells (a commercial cell platform with approximately 200 cm² active area), which, for the first time, have achieved the project performance target of >2 A/cm² at 0.65 V. This is a significant milestone in demonstrating the technological maturity of both ReCatalyst’s platinum alloy catalysts and ionysis’s hydrocarbon-based CCM technology. The next step for both companies is scaling. ReCatalyst is scaling up the synthesis of its new catalysts, while ionysis is currently installing the pilot plant for CCM production. I was really surprised at how many Solid-State battery companies there are now. Of course, (almost) everyone knows #QuantumScape and #SolidPower by now. But who else is out there? What other promising players are there? I have conducted a comprehensive analysis of the Solid-State market in 2024. What emerged is a list of over 40 companies, some of which are worth several billion dollars.  - 🌏 Which regions of the world are furthest along with their developments? - ⚗ Which technologies are the manufacturers relying on? - ⚡ What energy densities do they want to achieve? BESS: (Li)nstallations & (Na)ugmentations In my recent visit to the CLNB 2024, thanks to the Shanghai Metals Market, I was able to confirm how most of the key cell manufacturers and supply chain players, from providers of precursors for anode and cathode components, machinery and manufacturing solutions... all are adopting in a record time the Sodium-ion technology. In this sense, it is more than possible that the systems that are currently being developed and installed around LFP and NMC cells, will be complemented in future augmentations with Na-based systems. It will be important to take this into consideration in the business cases and technical solutions. The event organizers highlighted companies like Veken Industry, Paragonage sodium ion battery, or Jiangsu Highstar Battery Manufacturing Co.,Ltd There is also a clear strategy in Europe, leaded by companies like Northvolt, to make this possible in a short time. Apart from first pilot experiences, the launch of commercially prepared Na-Ion systems with long-term warranties is imminent, and its impact on the fragile balance of raw material prices has not yet been well measured. I guess that main mission of these facilities could also evolve if the technical capabilities and required investments of these systems make other usage profiles viable, such as small-seasonal use (displacing energy within periods of some weeks).
