Friday legends roll call! 🥁
Yesterday was ram packed! From attending Expert Empires and seeing legendary MC 👑🐝 Dani Wallace 👑🐝 warm up and entertain the crowd...
I first saw her in action at Olivia Marocco Showtime event and hearing the double sell out success of the big festoon was so inspiring 🙌🏼
To then after a day of experts on stage, to hot footing it to Home Grown Club to see fashion designer and retailer extraordinaire Karen Millen OBE give a very intimate and fascinating fireside chat on how and why she started her company, sold it and what she's doing now.
Such a lovely, warm and interesting woman. 🙌🏼
Excellent interview Jessica Barwell 👌🏼
Her biggest lesson learnt that she wanted to pass onto the audience was:
When you sell your company, yes let the lawyers do their thing... But 100% be sure to read all the small print so you don't lose your rights to your name, your initials and any other iteration of your brand for when / if you'd like to make a comeback.
Her story really reminded me of Jo Malone's.
Karen was burnt out and exhausted having set up a hugely succesful fashion empire with her hubby, raising a family et al, so hadn't checked all the dots and the i's meaning she was severely restricted for a new busines idea under her name.
In the Q&A I asked her how important PR was for her when she set up her first shop in her hometown, Maidstone.
One of her first lucky breaks around 1985 was when fashion industry magazine Drapers Record featured her store in the Top 10 Shop Scout section as one of the scouts had spotted her shop. A mention in The Clothes Show was memorable for her too.
It so reminded me of when my mum's mail-order company (Janet Coles Beads) had it's first ever bit of press and was featured in the Daily Mail in the 80's.
It was a game-changer as the PR snowball ❄️started to roll, leading eventually to a slot on The Clothes Show which was incredible for the business (I stillneed to get the VHS recording to digital! ).
Thanks to PR, my mum ended up being a household name with the moniker: The Queen Bead 📿
Phew! It’s been an inspiring and nostalgic few days filled with valuable lessons with female powerhouses —from navigating the fine print in business deals to the power of PR in shaping the success of personal brands.
Oh and hello Sarah Clay my evening buddy, the cycling legend who's just completed Geneva to Milan 😅💪🏼 🚵♀️
Y Angela Hammond un placer conocerte, que risa tuvimos!
