Professional articles in both Optometry and Ophthalmology journals have been discussing the illegality of automatic kickbacks for cataract patient referrals for the past year. Some cataract practices rely heavily on patient referrals from other providers. So much so, that there is an automatic built-in business behind the referrals where additional fees are taken from the patient and given back to the referring provider as a "finders fee" or kick back. In this video for patients, Dr. Tokuhara discusses the topic of cataract referral kickbacks. Hopefully, as cataract surgeons, this is a process that we can end to restore faith and trust back into the doctor-patient relationship.
