“We are doing democracy here, and it’s actually working.” America in One Room – the Youth Vote was an experiment about the power of face-to-face conversation and informed deliberation to bring people together and inspire engagement in our democracy. And the results prove that deliberation works. NBC’s writeup on America in One Room – the Youth Vote discusses those results and gets at the heart of what A1R is all about: fostering mutual understanding through deliberation. Several of our A1R delegates discuss their experiences and takeaways from the event, and Helena CEO Henry Elkus explains his vision for America in One Room. Want to feel a bit more hopeful about US democracy, Gen Z political participation, and reaching across partisan divides? The results from America in One Room: The Youth Vote are out! Some highlights: ✨ When asked about those with whom they strongly disagreed, there was an increase in mutual respect. The percentage agreeing that those with whom they strongly disagreed “have good reasons; there just are better ones on the other side” went up overall from 64% to 71%. ✨ The experience of deliberation also increased their satisfaction with democracy. When asked “How satisfied or dissatisfied are you with the way democracy is working in the U.S” overall satisfaction increased an impressive *29 points* from 29% to 58%. Republicans increased dramatically from 38% to 72%. Independents increased from 24% to 40% and Democrats increased from 26% to 52%. The deliberative experience seemed to be a positive demonstration for how democracy could work across our many differences. Ballotpedia's founder & CEO, Leslie Graves, shares monthly insights on PBS's "Preserving Democracy." This month's column is on ballot measures. Ballot measures have been a staple of our civic life since at least the 17th century. Living up to our identity as the Encyclopedia of American Politics, Ballotpedia is undertaking a massive research effort to assemble a complete historical record of every ballot measure that has been on every state’s ballot. This body of work will provide an unparalleled resource for researchers, reporters, and the voting public on how ballot measures have evolved. In this column, Leslie details the way ballot measures serve as a marker for voters' attitudes and preferences. Read the full column here, and let us know what you think! https://lnkd.in/eWjtfgRQ
