WEEK AHEAD: MTG’s Motion to Vacate… The Senate left town last week with no agreement on how to advance the reauthorization of the Federal Aviation Administration ahead of next Friday’s deadline. Several lawmakers have said they will not agree to fast track the measure if their proposed amendments are not considered, raising the possibility that the chamber will take up a short-term extension, according to the No. 2 Senate Republican… Read the full article here: https://lnkd.in/gGejnCzg

An now for an update on the saga that has been the FAA Reauthorization Bill. This article does a nice job highlighting the pitfalls of the democratic process, but also notes the key elements of the bill that are going to make it so impactful. I would ask that we as an aviation community keep the pressure on your congressmen to meet the 8 March deadline. #aam #faa #singleseatconsulting

A second short-term extension for FAA authorization is on the table. The current extension will expire at the end of the month and the proposed second extension will give the Senate more time to negotiate. What are your thoughts? https://lnkd.in/etXcdhq2

Just days after sharing his concerns with the House Appropriations Committee, Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg reminded their Senate counterparts that adding 10 more long haul flights per day to the already overburdened Reagan National Airport (DCA) would put substantial pressure on the airport. Crucially, he warned of “a likelihood of delays or some kind of flow process that could impact travelers” caused by these additional flights at DCA. We couldn’t agree more with the Secretary, or Senator Van Hollen (D-MD), who said, “it would be unacceptable to have a bill designed on safety that comprises safety at DCA.” That’s why the Coalition to Protect America’s Regional Airports urges Senators to vote on and support the bipartisan amendment to the FAA Reauthorization bill that removes the provision that adds more flights at DCA. 🚨 Advocacy alert: On Wednesday, Congress moved forward with opening debate and consideration on the FAA Reauthorization bill and tracking for votes on final passage possibly next week. What we're up to: This week, we sent a letter of support for the bill to Congressional leaders urging bill passage—not another temporary, patchwork extension. The big picture: Passage and enactment of a long-term FAA Reauthorization bill will foster growth and stability for the #drone and #AAM industries and U.S. leadership in advanced aviation. In response to passage of the FAA Reauthorization Act of 2024 by the Senate, National Air Carrier Association President and CEO George Novak issued the following statement: NACA congratulates Senate Commerce Committee Chair Maria Cantwell (D-Wash.) and Ranking Member Ted Cruz (R-Texas), House Transportation and Infrastructure Committee Chair Sam Graves (R-Mo.) and Ranking Member Rick Larsen (D-Wash.), for working on a bipartisan basis to enact The FAA Reauthorization Act of 2024, a five-year bill to reauthorize the FAA and NTSB. This timely, sweeping legislation will ensure that the U.S. continues to maintain the safest, most efficient airspace system in the world. We are especially grateful that many NACA priorities were addressed in the bill, including: (1) modernizing pilot training programs to increase pilot supply and enhance pilot performance; (2) refraining from imposing new or higher taxes and fees on passengers; (3) addressing the shortage of air traffic controllers at major ATC facilities in Florida; (4) authorizing more funding and resources for the NTSB; and (5) protecting air service to small and rural communities. We commend the Senate for passing the bill last night with strong bipartisan support and urge the House to follow suit next week. #aviation #aviationsafety #airtrafficcontrol #airtrafficmanagement #pilottraining https://lnkd.in/g4gShfMP

Excellent news today from Washington. The House passed the bipartisan FAA Reauthorization Act to reauthorize the Federal Aviation Administration for five years with a 387-26 vote, sending it to President Biden just days before the deadline. Passage of the legislation marks the end of Congress’s long-winded road to reauthorization. Key mandates include hiring up to 3,000 new air traffic controllers, extending cockpit voice recording durations from two to 25 hours, Beyond Visual Line of Sight (#BVLOS) regulations to enable commercial drone operations, and the acceleration of Advanced Air Mobility (AAM) regulations to enable these aircraft to operate and scale in the United States. The bill also prioritizes a new Runway Safety Council. Having dedicated many hours alongside Sean P. D. and other members of our government relations team -- specifically on our AAM Summit we've hosted the past 2 years to support and advance this initiative -- I'm thrilled to see this news today.
