Today, on Juneteenth, we honor and reflect on the ongoing fight for equality and justice. This historic day reminds us of the resilience and strength of African American communities, and the importance of continuing the work towards true equity. African Americans make up 13% of the US population but represent 28% of those waiting for an organ transplant. Dr. Velma Scantlebury, the first African American female transplant surgeon in the US, reminds us: “Increasing organ donation in minority communities is not just about numbers—it’s about saving lives and giving hope to families.” On this Juneteenth, let us commit to advancing health equity and increasing donation awareness in multicultural communities. Together, we can make a difference. #Juneteenth #AMAT #OrganDonation #HealthEquity #MulticulturalDonors #SaveLives #CallToAction

🎉 🎉 This investment from MacKenzie Scott honors the fight for justice of all our clients, both former and current. They are at the center of our celebration and will continue to be at the center of our future actions. 💚 💜 The investment has significance for Women’s Link beyond its direct impact on the organization. Feminist organizations, especially those led by women of color, typically experience underinvestment. Women’s Link’s leaders recognize that fundraising is impacted by a capitalist system and other systems of oppression, which allow and encourage the accumulation of money in the hands of a few people and force many people to live in poverty. We are committed to conscientiously use this donation to help dismantle systems of oppression and to advance human rights and reproductive justice. We will continue building a world where the use of law is no longer a privilege racial justice is centered in all of our actions, and the love and fight for the autonomy, freedom and reproductive justice of women, girls and gender-diverse people is a reality.
🎉 We’re excited to announce a transformative one-time donation from MacKenzie Scott. The grant is a powerful affirmation of our work to advance reproductive justice and the human rights of women and girls. Thank you to MacKenzie Scott and all of the donors who support our fight for the autonomy, freedom and reproductive justice of women, girls and gender-diverse people! As organizations work in the trenches, reforming America's entrenched systems, they face nonstop pressure. Now more than ever, we need the bold support described in recent discussions: foundations stepping into the fray, not back, to fortify these crucial movements. True solidarity means sharing the risk, not shying away. It also needs to be stated that Inclusivity in Black-led movements means embracing all members of the community. Ignoring the needs of Black men with initiatives focused only on women, girls, queer, and trans individuals, leaves our collective pursuit of justice incomplete. It isn’t innovate; it’s leaning into the divisiveness. #keepBuilding
"Simply moving money isn’t enough if you create unnecessary hurdles or uncertainties in the process. Organizations need long-term grant commitments that increase with the rates of inflation over time. They need unrestricted funding that allows them to adapt quickly to changing conditions. They need funding without strings attached. They need more agency over where the money goes. And they need to receive those funds in a way that doesn’t require unnecessary paperwork or grant reports that no one will read or draw lessons from." ~Hanni Hanson of the Compton Foundation #Philanthropy #MoveTheMoney

I need your help. This afternoon, Danielle Smith, the Premier of Alberta, announced a comprehensive plan to erase queer and trans people from public life. She intends to eliminate gender affirming care for minors, ban trans women from sports, require parental opt-IN and provincial-level approval for classroom discussion of sexual orientation or gender identity, and more. Since last May, I have been the first Director of Legal at Egale Canada — the country’s leading 2SLGBTQI rights organization. I am writing this to share personal reflections and to ask for your support. Today’s announcement is devastating. As I sat here eating a way-too-late dinner and catching up on the press coverage, I finally let myself feel it and started weeping. I know most people don’t understand what it means to be trans. And, I know the policy actions listed above aren’t immediately obviously bad to everyone reading this. As a result, I know much of the work is in education and humanizing trans people. This is something we’re actively working to accomplish (mainly my incredible colleagues at Egale). But for now, even if you don’t yet get it, I need you to just trust me. This will cost lives if it isn’t stopped. This is unprecedented in Canada. This is playing politics with our lives and trying to prevent us from existing. So what can you do? Other than learn more about how Smith’s actions are so dangerous, I want you to consider supporting my work. As far as I know, I am the only trans lawyer in the country who has the privilege of being employed to defend our rights. (There are incredible trans lawyers doing critical work in this area but they also have to manage their own practices and clients, teaching responsibilities, etc.). The only way I will be able to do this through my role at Egale Canada is with public (financial) support. In Canada, we often expect the government to be a source of protection and support. Today, the Government of Alberta became the oppressor and the threat. Please help me and our team at Egale fight back: https://egale.ca/donate/ (click “legal advocacy”) And stay tuned to see more of how we will be fighting back.

I’m excited to share that I just returned from visiting a reservation in Central America, where I had the opportunity to present our new anti-gender-based violence resource to an indigenous population. This new resource is designed explicitly for patriarchal indigenous states where illiteracy rates are high. It’s created to open dialogue by the use of images depicting gender-based violence (GBV). During my time in Central America, it was heartbreaking to hear these Indigenous women share their stories of abuse, but it was uplifting knowing we were giving them a voice and offering local resources for them to find help. GBV is not only a form of human trafficking; it is also a root cause of human trafficking. It is underreported, unaddressed, and silently causes unimaginable mental, emotional, physical, and spiritual suffering to victims in indigenous communities throughout the Global South. Therefore, Life 107 is fighting on the prevention side of anti-human trafficking by bringing awareness to communities where GBV exists. This new Life 107 anti-GBV kit comes with ten poster-size images showing different forms of GBV, such as sexual violence in the household, physical abuse of wives by their husbands with children in the room (generational violence), controlling behaviors, gender inequality in community leadership, and more. It also comes with one 31-page facilitator’s guide in English and one 31-page facilitator’s guide in Spanish (more translations available). Life 107 is offering these kits to anyone who works in indigenous Latin American contexts for a donation of $30.00 U.S. currency or more. This kit can be used by churches looking for an initiative to implement on their next short-term mission trip, by full-time missionaries, anyone working with refugees, NGOs, or by any individual or organization working in patriarchal societies with high illiteracy rates. Please contact me for more details and instructions on how to order your kit! Donate here: https://lnkd.in/eFJDaTvb
