Never-before-seen in the U.S., #ACPmember Dominion Energy is building a massive $625 million installation vessel—Charybdis—that will revolutionize U.S. offshore wind. Built by a thousand workers in a Texas shipyard and completed in late 2024/early 2025, this vessel will transport and construct offshore wind turbines along the U.S. coast. Its maiden voyage will help install 176 turbines off the coast of Virginia Beach, VA as part of the Coastal Virginia Offshore Wind project. Once operational, this offshore wind project will generate 2,600 megawatts of energy—enough to power 660,000 homes. https://bit.ly/3VGO483

The offshore wind energy industry is at the tipping point of a major shift due to Scotland's ScotWind leasing round. With current onshore wind power generation in Scotland totalling 8.8GW and offshore generating 2.1GW, the potential of 20 new projects being developed creates a tremendous opportunity to revolutionise the industry with an influx of innovative proposals. “Historically, we had the oil and gas supply chain. It is now an energy supply chain. We have companies working in oil and gas, but the same companies are now also working in hydrogen, carbon capture and offshore wind. It is a much more diverse supply chain now than maybe it was five or ten years ago,” says David Rennie, Head of Low Carbon Energy at our domestic arm, Scottish Enterprise. For both floating wind and hydrogen, the combination of ambition and technical expertise will help Scotland with its delivery of a clean energy transition. “For a number of the ScotWind projects, there are questions about getting a grid connection. Some will and some may not. If they can’t, the only way they can proceed is to produce hydrogen, and either transport back to shore or store it.” This comment, by David Rennie, head of low-carbon energy at Scottish Enterprise, is the first time I've seen the idea floated (see what I did there) that not all of the investors/operators in the ScotWind offshore wind projects planned for the North Sea will get grid connections for the power they hope to generate. Raises at least the following questions: 1. Surely as part of their initial auction applications, or if not certainly the business plans that have been developed since those auctions were awarded, ScotWind consortia have all operated under the reasonable assumption of being able to secure a grid connection at some point? If not, what is the point of the millions spent on scoping, marine assessments, supply chain procurement research, office space, staffing etc? 2. Given that not one of the ScotWind consortia I have spoken to had included the production of green hydrogen (and its export to Germany via a pipeline, for example) as part of their initial business plans, why are Scottish authorities assuming that ScotWind can, will - maybe even will be forced to - produce hydrogen? 3. What level of confidence can any ScotWind consortium now have that these projects will receive the sort of government-backed planning, consenting, policy and infrastructure support that is so crucial to them getting off the ground? 4. Are things really that bleak in terms of grid build-out? (It seems so.) #ScotWind #offshorewind #Scotland

CLEAN ENERGY WIN – The wind industry is getting a major boost with the announcement of the United States’ first offshore wind installation vessel! With its maiden voyage scheduled for 2025, Dominion Energy’s Charybdis will be the first ship made in the United States that can pick up components from onshore manufacturers, deliver them to American offshore wind sites, and help assemble the wind projects that will bring us one step closer to reaching 30,000 MW of offshore wind capacity by 2030. Watch the video to see what our Principal Deputy Assistant Secretary Jeffrey Marootian has to say about how favorable tax credits and investments from the Inflation Reduction Act can bring more wins like this one to the offshore wind industry: https://lnkd.in/ex4vRzCZ #OffshoreWind #MadeInAmerica #CleanEnergy

Extreme interesting analysis as the European Union wants the North Sea to become the “power plant of Europe” by building offshore wind farms – but with the maritime countries heavily dependent on private companies that aim to maximise profit, reaching that goal will be difficult, as a joint investigation by Follow the Money and partner organisations reveals. #windenergy #renewables #energy #investing #policymaking #EUpolicy #followthemoney #220dots

A turbine at a large offshore wind farm is producing power for the U.S. grid for the first time Pieces of wind turbines are being loaded onto barges in new london, connecticut, and taken miles into the atlantic ocean where two energy companies - Ørsted and Eversource Energy are assembling a wind farm with twelve turbines, called south fork wind. One of the turbines is already providing power to the u.s. electric grid through sea-bed cables to east hampton, new york. Jeffrey Martin (Director of Business Development for the Offshore Wind Group at Eversource Energy): “Seeing projects like South Fork Wind and others finally come to fruition represents the culmination of so many years and the work of so many people, not only the offshore wind developers, but regulators here in the United States to combat climate change, to decrease our dependency on fossil fuels. And it's just again, it's there's a great sense of accomplishment and frankly, joy to see these types of projects coming online here in the United States where for so many years and for so many decades, this kind of thing has been happening overseas in Europe and Asia. And to finally see these projects here in the US come to fruition is just very satisfying because it means we're finally starting to do our part to part to combat climate change, to sort of catch up with the rest of the world.” When south fork fully opens by early next year, it will be capable of generating 132 megawatts of offshore wind energy to power more than 70,000 homes. #turbines #power #offshorewind #offshore #windenergy #renewableenergy #cleanenergy #offshorewindenergy

Collaborative solutions to accelerate offshore wind production will take centre stage in 2024, as the US looks to ramp up development to meet aggressive renewable energy targets. Although plans are well underway to construct offshore wind farms on the US outer continental shelf (USOCS), the Jones Act and an absence of US flagged Jones Act compliant wind turbine installation vessels (WTIV) are impeding progress. In their latest prediction, Corey Greenwald and George Karayannides predict how alternative partnership options are to be heavily explored and adopted if the US is to meet its 2030 offshore wind production goal.
