Why are students living in shared accommodation seven times as likely to have a fire? PBSA is a high-risk sector, and the potential for emergencies and loss increases when a number of students share facilities. There's a number of reasons for this, including the increased use of appliances which lead to more chance for fire hazards, and greater wear and tear to potentially faulty facilities. However, the vast majority of fire-related incidents can be solved through communication and education. There are hundreds of fire service call-outs in University towns around the UK that are only caused by student inattentiveness or incompetence. Rookie errors like: - leaving doors open whilst cooking, and setting the smoke alarm off. - putting forks in the microwave, and starting a fire. - cooking whilst under the influence, and letting unattended cooking auto ignite. - or, like the video below, putting water on an oil fire. These examples are all totally preventable, but they repeatedly occur in student digs. #CampusFireSafety is a priority! According to the NFPA, an average of 3,379 fires break out annually in student accommodations. Most of these fires start in kitchens due to unattended equipment. Peak times for fires are weekends, especially between 4 p.m. and midnight. However, fires occurring between midnight and 8 a.m. cause more injuries and property damage. To mitigate risks, remember to stay vigilant when cooking, use flameless candles, avoid overloading power strips and outlets, and ensure clear evacuation paths. Hours vs outcome – what’s important in independent schools? It’s time that we moved away from the idea that ‘hours of cleaning’ are the most important element in delivering a cleaning service. We should all be focused on the outcomes – whether the building is visibly clean, is proven to be hygienic and whether students feel safe and can thrive and focus on their learning. I’ve spoken to independent schools where they aren’t happy with the current standards. Often the answer is to bring in some extra hours – throw some more resource at the problem! But that doesn’t always work or deliver results in the long term. Sometimes an innovative or better managed approach can be much more effective. Typically on a cleaning contract, labour costs will be around 70-85% of the overall cost and if that’s not the case, then the client should look very carefully at what’s being proposed – will cobots and innovation actually make an impact in your school? Part of any KPI should be staffing numbers and turnover so you know who is on your site and what that churn level is, but I don’t think that an hours-based approach is the right one for independent schools where the outcome is what really matters and the standards need to be consistently high. OSH IN SCHOOL *BE ALERT* Be alert to slip, trip and fall hazards and help to prevent injuries to yourself, your friends and others. Making our schools and workplace safer is everybody’s business. OTHER HAZARDS There are other hazards that can be found in the school area such as in the playground, canteen, laboratory etc. You can do your part by identifying the hazards and report to the authorities. WHAT SHOULD YOU DO? Parents ?Teachers? Student ? • You must always be alert and be careful while standing or walking. Do not play around. It will help you a avoid slip and trip hazard. • Ensure clear passage whichever your direction is. Any obstruction such a bags, chairs and other visible objects must be removed or put aside. This will help you from falling and you’ll help prevent the occurrence of an accident. We never know! • Be careful if you are using the stairs. Hold the handrails and don’t run around! • Switch of all electrical tools or equipment when your task is done. At least nobody will be hurt by the electrical hazard. • Make sure you know the proper way to carry all the loads in the bags.
