This year, ESDIP - European Society of Digital and Integrative Pathology will provide a Travel Grant Program for members to attend the 20th European Congress on Digital Pathology (ECDP2024). ESDIP will provide a limited number of travel grants to applicants whose abstracts are accepted for oral presentation at ECDP2024. For this edition, ESDIP will give out 10 travel grants of up to 500€ each plus free congress registration for participants based in Europe and 5 travel grants of up to 1000€ plus free congress registration for participants based outside of Europe. 🚀 Exciting News from the Academic World! 🚀 Today, we celebrate Amine Lagzouli's confirmation seminar for his #PhD on "Development of an Automated #Segmentation, Registration, and Analysis Tool Based on Deep Learning for the Assessment of #BoneRemodelling and Adaptation." Amine is undertaking a joint PhD at the Centre and the QUT (Queensland University of Technology) and the Université Paris-Est Créteil (UPEC), where he is breaking new ground in #artificialintelligence for #medicalimaging. His research focuses on creating a deep learning-based pipeline to enhance the segmentation, registration, and analysis of high-resolution #bone #imaging, aiming to automate bone assessments for both biomechanical research and clinical #orthopaedic practices. #Osteoporosis, characterised by reduced bone mass and deterioration of bone microarchitecture, increases fracture risk. Amine’s thesis leverages micro-computed tomography (μCT) to deepen our understanding of bone remodelling and adaptation in pre-clinical research. Through advanced imaging and AI-based analysis, his work provides a thorough evaluation of #bonemorphology and dynamic remodelling characteristics, primarily using animal models. Key highlights of his research include: 🦴An automated μCT analysis pipeline, boosting the precision and efficiency of bone assessments. 🦴Detailed evaluations of bone remodelling in mouse models, offering insights into osteoporosis and bone disorders. 🦴Exploration of dynamic bone remodelling in rabbit models using in-vivo 4D #synchrotron micro-CT imaging. I am pleased to share our most recent article entitled " Introducing fitting models for estimating age-specific dose and effective dose in paediatric patients undergoing head, chest and abdomen–pelvis imaging protocols: a patient study" which is published in the "Journal of Medical Radiation Sciences". In this study, we presented fitting models for the estimation of age-specific dose estimates (ASDE), in the same direction of size-specific dose estimates, and effective doses based on patient age, gender and the type of CT examination used in paediatric head, chest and abdomen–pelvis imaging. A total of 583 paediatric patients were included in the study. According to our results, the ASDE in head, chest, and abdomen–pelvis CT examinations increases with increasing age. As age increases, the effective dose in head and abdomen–pelvis CT scans decreased. However, for chest scans, the effective dose initially showed a decreasing trend until the first year of life; after that, it increases in correlation with age. An elegant study published in EMBO Molecular Medicine by Gou Young Koh at the Korea Advanced Institute of Science and Technology (KAIST) and collaborators observed that T4 or PTU treatment can significantly alter thyroid gland vasculature and architecture by modulating follicular cell height, vascular density, and diameter, using IVIM Technology’s intravital microscope (IVM). In vivo imaging of thyroid tissues in T4 or PTU-treated mice showed significant changes in vascularity and follicular architecture. T4 decreased follicular cell height, vascular density, and vascular diameter, whereas PTU increased these parameters. PTU also induced endothelial cell proliferation and enhanced blood flow, indicating active vascular remodeling. Ultrastructural analysis revealed T4 decreased endothelial fenestrae but increased caveolae, while PTU increased fenestrae numbers without altering caveolae. These changes were specific to the thyroid gland and highlight the dynamic adaptation of thyroid vasculature in response to TSHR signaling.
