The annual Olga Jonasson Lecture at Clinical Congress is a testimony to leadership and education in surgery and a reflection of the capacity of women to reach academic pinnacles. Dr. Jonasson was a pioneer and trailblazer in academic surgery, exemplified by her becoming the first woman Chair of Surgery in US history. Making trauma surgeons perform better in the treatment of intertrochanteric fractures! 🦴 Our structured educational program, designed to improve the quality of reduction and implant positioning in intertrochanteric fracture surgery, had a positive impact on radiographic outcomes and reoperation rates, particularly benefiting less experienced surgeons. This intervention has the potential to enhance patient care for intertrochanteric fractures and consequently reduce the associated healthcare burden and could be particularly beneficial for hospitals with limited resources and surgeons in private practice who may lack the capacity to develop their own educational materials. Have a look! - the publication is open access: https://lnkd.in/eSc3dz64 Amazing work Pavel Sklorz and thank you for the support Henrik Eckardt 💪

This 3D-printed model of a young child’s skull guided surgeons to remove a life-threatening brain tumour. Based on 2D scans of Issac – an eight-year-old patient at Sydney Children's Hospitals Network – the model not only allowed doctors to plan the surgery but also helped Issac and his family understand and visualise the complex procedure. The model is geometrically and anatomically accurate, showing the precise size, shape and location of the tumour, as well as other critical parts, such as the optic nerves, which had to be considered to ensure they were not damaged during the operation. The surgery went “fantastically well,” and Issac is already back at school, enjoying writing songs and most of all, mathematics.

Oral and maxillofacial surgery has ancient roots, with significant advancements such as Hullihen's 1846 mandibular body osteotomy. The field has evolved through phases, including wartime craniofacial treatments, but lacks uniform training and registration standards across countries. A study proposes an education framework focused on quality professional training tailored to each country's specific legislation, leveraging global access to scientific knowledge.
