Two months ago, I could not have planned the path I am on today. My perspective was narrow, my self-doubt was unchallenged and the people around me were simply ill-equipped to help write the next chapter of my career. To be fair, those people were my young children... they can barely write, period.
The obvious came to light after a call with an old friend: I was stuck in my own head. He challenged me to proactively reconnect and fortify my professional network. Game on!
Over the last 2 months I exchanged dozens of emails, calls, texts, and cups of coffee with old contacts. We reminisced about the amazing things we accomplished together, we shared opportunities, and helped one another with practical matters, such as resume reviews. I chased introductory meetings with new contacts while refining the outline of my next chapter. I am continually humbled by the kindness of my new contacts and now have new business partners, project advisors, golf buddies and at least one person that may help me smoke the perfect brisket!
Last week was a fitting example of "getting out of my own head." I attended a networking dinner and spent the evening with a group of people I had never met before. I found myself engaged in conversations about career transitions, children, music, and a deep dive into a challenging FP&A process. I walked out of that dinner with greater perspective than I went in with.
Two months ago, I was not in the right headspace to attend a networking dinner. A challenge from a friend led to a LinkedIn post, which led to a text, which led to a coffee meeting and ultimately, I left a wonderful dinner with a head full of new perspective.
What will the next two months bring?

🚀 Embracing the Future: What Would Rickover Do? Leading the Cattle Drive in the DoN 🚀
In today’s fast-evolving tech landscape, the Department of the Navy (DoN) must reset and revitalize legacy systems to pave the way for advanced, modern capabilities. By phasing out outdated technologies through the Structured Divestment Approach outlined in our latest memo, we can reallocate resources to drive innovation and maintain our competitive edge.
What Would Rickover Do? If Admiral Rickover were leading this Cattle Drive, he would apply his renowned principles of leadership and excellence to ensure success:
• Set the Standard: Rickover was known for his “Leadership by Example.” 🌟 He would demonstrate unwavering commitment and hold himself and others to the highest standards, setting a clear vision and leading with integrity.
• Empower with Responsibility: Emphasizing “Personal Responsibility and Accountability,” 💼 Rickover would ensure that every team member is equipped with the necessary resources and trained effectively, while also being held accountable for their performance.
• Drive Continuous Improvement: With his focus on “Continuous Improvement,” 🔄 Rickover would foster a culture of relentless innovation and learning, always seeking ways to enhance efficiency and effectiveness.
• Communicate Clearly: Practicing “Clear Communication and Mutual Respect,” 🗣️ Rickover would ensure transparent, open dialogue within the team, building trust and fostering strong, respectful relationships.
• Maintain Rigorous Oversight: Applying “Rigorous Oversight and Discipline,” 🔍 he would closely monitor progress, enforce strict standards, and make adjustments as needed to keep the initiative on track.
• Practice Brutal Honesty: Rickover was known for his “Brutal Honesty,” 🛠️ addressing issues head-on and ensuring that problems are confronted directly to drive real improvement.
• Encourage a Questioning Attitude: He would promote a “Questioning Attitude,” ❓ encouraging team members to ask challenging questions and continuously seek better solutions.
Rickover’s principles offer a valuable perspective in shaping the outcomes led by the DoN through this vital transformation, channeled by the rigor and dedication that defined his leadership. Let’s drive this change together! 💪🚀
