25 plus Years Championing Global Public Health Excellence Across Africa and Beyond: Fostering Partnerships & Driving Innovation
I recently wrote down some thoughts about what we should never compromise on as public health professionals. I say "we" because leadership in public health isn’t just a title—it’s the role we all play, no matter our position. Every one of us, from the frontlines to the boardroom, has the power to lead in our way. 1. Listening to Communities: Our work starts with the people we serve. We must continuously engage with them to co-create solutions that truly reflect their needs. 2. Equity in Every Decision: Public health is for everyone, but especially for those most marginalized. We must ensure that no one is left behind due to their socioeconomic status, race, or location. 3. Building Trust Through Transparency: People trust us to protect their health. That’s why we owe them honesty and openness, especially when we don’t have all the answers. 4. Championing Cultural Competence: We can’t lead effectively without understanding the cultural contexts that shape people’s health. We must strive to be culturally sensitive. 5. Advocating for Health as a Right: Health is not a privilege; it’s a basic human right! 6. Responding to Crises with Empathy: Our communities feel it the most when crises strike. We must be there not just with solutions but with empathy 7. Supporting Mental Health and Resilience: Public health isn’t just about physical well-being; it’s about mental health too 8. Sustainability for Future Generations: Everything we do today impacts tomorrow. We must ensure that the health systems and policies we create are sustainable, benefiting not only current generations but also those yet to come. As public health leaders, we are responsible for leading the community, not just for them but with them. #PublicHealth #CommunityWellbeing #HealthEquity #Leadership #CulturalCompetence #MentalHealth #Sustainability #PeopleFirst

Public Health Medicine Specialist | Passionate about creating a healthy balance between work and play, and contributing to the global public good through health policy and systems strengthening.
Public Health Career Conversations: Episode 16 – Dr Stacey Mearns “Volunteering is usually a good way to gain experience, and I guess, test the waters, especially if you're thinking about transitioning from clinical medicine into public health or thinking about, “Do I want to incorporate public health into my career?” I think getting some experience in short bursts, maybe 3 months placements or 3-month volunteer opportunities, or 6 months will help with that decision making. Sometimes I think we feel that we have to just make this one big decision. And actually, there are good NGOs – MSF is a great one – where people can volunteer, and as clinicians for anywhere from 3 months up to 6 months, and as part of that gain that sort of exposure of what's it like to work clinically in some of these different types of settings and start to see where that public health piece comes to the interface of the clinical work.” Dr Stacey Mearns, Director of Resilient Health Services at Resolve to Save Lives discusses how humanitarian settings provide an environment for interested individuals to experience the synergy between clinical and public health but highlights that these volunteer experiences need not occur only in international crises but can begin in our own communities. *Key video highlights:* 1:00 Decision to pursue public health 12:00 Experiences working in humanitarian settings 22:45 Current role translating humantirain experience into resilient health systems 31:00 Advice for emerging public health enthusiasts #publichealth #healthworkforce #publichealthcareers #publichealthcareerconversations #shareyourstory https://lnkd.in/de2Sk7MD

"Listening is an art that requires attention over talent, spirit over ego, and others over self." - Dean Jackson" I have noticed, most times when we say public health, the focus is often talking – through social and behavior change (SBC) campaigns, advocacy efforts, or program implementations. In-between all the talking, we often tend to overlook a fundamental guiding principle of public health: Listening. Because public health is not just about telling people what to do or how they should live; it's about understanding the needs, concerns, and experiences of the communities we serve. It's about actively listening to what they have to say with empathy regardless of Their social status or background. It's about recognizing the expertise that is within communities themselves and working with them to create solutions that reflect their needs. Because when we listen, we don't just hear words; we hear the heartbeat of public health. Picture: A picture of me truly listening when I worked as a Research Assistant for the ProACT study in Chadiza District, Eastern Province.

Do you work in a state, Tribal, local, or territorial health department in the United States? Participate in the Governmental Public Health Job Task Survey, help strengthen the public health workforce, and get $10 ;) The purpose of the survey is to better understand what tasks people in specific public health jobs do the most and which tasks they believe are the most important to their work. This information will give the workforce, governmental public health leaders, and academic institutions and training programs better insight into what a wide range of governmental public health jobs entail and what might be needed to best support people in these roles. https://lnkd.in/eBv2kFUw Thanks to Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, Association of Schools and Programs of Public Health (ASPPH), Public Health Accreditation Board, and National Board of Public Health Examiners (NBPHE) for supporting this work!
