“Sorry mummy, papa... yahi last option hai” There is always an option. Always a way. Parents just fail to show it to their children. Another student in Kota, an 18-year-old girl preparing for IIT-JEE, tragically took her own life. Reading her suicide note, where she calls herself the worst daughter and apologizes to her parents for not being able to crack IIT-JEE, is depressing. These deaths are preventable. I won't comment on this specific case, but generally, the top cause of stress is 'expectations from parents who love you so much.' This stress can be eased if parents engage in daily conversations with their children, reassuring them that their lives are not solely determined by exam results. It's okay to fail. No mental health counsellor can impact a kid's mind as much as parents. They raised the kid, they have their trust, they know their strengths and weaknesses, their stress-coping levels, and more. Parents should realise that having an unemployed, and unsuccessful child at home is still better than having no child at all. Many students fail these exams. Take NEET, for example, where 19 lakh students compete for 1 lakh MBBS seats, leaving 18 lakhs unsuccessful. Your child might be one of them, and that's okay. Perhaps they are destined for greater things, but for that, they need to stay alive – and that's where your support comes in. Should student counselling be made mandatory for competitve exams? Work done by Christ University, Bangalore professor and scholar Title: Women's Empowerment, Mindfulness, and the Role of Women in Eradicating Alcohol and Drug Addiction in Indian Society Our research on women's empowerment, mindfulness, and the crucial role women play in eradicating alcohol and drug addiction in Indian society has garnered significant attention with 539 downloads! In our study, we highlight the remarkable progress being made: Girls from the Assam region now receive laptops for 1st class in class 10 and scooters for 1st class in 10+2. The government has addressed the electricity issues we raised. These advancements are empowering women and creating a brighter future for all. Additionally, I am thrilled to know that private and government funds have been sanctioned for women's empowerment in the Assam region. This substantial support will further strengthen efforts to create a healthier, addiction-free society. Why did a promising Indian Institute of Technology, Kharagpur student feel so alone that she took her own life? It is with deep sorrow that we share the news of a fourth-year student who was found dead in her hostel. This heartbreaking event is a tragic reminder of the struggles many young people face in silence. According to information received by RTI activist Dr. Vivek Pandey, 37 suicides occurred in the last five years from 2019-20 to 2023-24 across the Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs). Why aren’t students who are under immense pressure getting the regular #counseling they need? Why is #mentalhealth still treated as a stigma? Do we realise the pain and anxiety of a child emotionally and physically when we as a parent : 1. punish them physically? 2. ask them to stop asking questions? 3. smoke and drink in front of them? 4. take away things from them without explaining? 5. not respond when upset with them? 6. respond sarcastically ? 7. compare with other children? 8. suspicious of their actions? 9. fight in front of the them? 10. change their school? 11. shout on them because you were upset due to some other reason? 12. don't turn up for the events you had promised them? 13. are busy on your mobile while they want to be heard? 14. overprotect them? 15. ask their friends about their performance? Do you think, above mentioned points need attention? If yes, then you are an adult with whom the child will be safe. As adults, we forget the emotional health of the child. Of course we take care of it, but as per our convenience. We feel strangers can hurt our children and we are protecting them but the truth is child needs safety of their emotional health starting from their parents to face and respond to any unhealthy situation with strangers or members other than the family. One of the reasons why I am building Mindei is because the demographic dividend that we’re so proud of in India, is at risk! Look at this slide being presented by Dr. Girish Kulkarni from NIMHANS, Bangalore. He was one of my co-speakers at Jayshree Periwal International School’s Students for Collaborative Change event. He was talking about the outstanding work by the team running TeleManas, the mental health helpline. In this slide he showed us the split of all the calls received by age. >70% calls coming in are from folks in the 18-45 age group. A lion’s share of this belongs to the 18-25 age group (not shown in the picture, however). Some questions jump to mind as soon as one sees the is slide. ❓Why are under 25 year olds experiencing so many mental health issues? ❓What avenues do they have for seeking support? ❓How can the education industry do their part in ensuring emotional wellbeing and resilience? ❓What role does government and governance play in all this?
