You may have seen my post about being a Security Supervisor for Allied Universal. You might be wondering why. Aren't I an IT guy?
Yes, I am. I've just taken a break. My first three years in IT felt...wrong, somehow. I couldn't place the feeling at first. All I knew was that I wasn't where I should be. I didn't have 5+ certs like my colleagues did.
But it turns out that I just needed to improve my work ethic. Now, working 55-70 hour weeks in the physical security industry, then coming home to take care of my home and family, I have a much better appreciation for 40-60 hour work weeks. I realize now that I was lucky before. Full-time work is a fair sight better than all-time work.
All-time work leaves no time for hobbies, friends, or self-improvement. You're just treading water. But that's not to say that it's all been a waste.
I've learned a lot about myself over this last year with Securitas & Allied Universal. I've learned better time management. I've gained leadership skills. I've become more firm but fair. And most importantly, I've found God.
I am ready to take these skills and traits back to IT. It'll take some doing, I know. My competition hasn't taken a year-long break. My competition hasn't let certs lapse. My competition hasn't stopped networking. But I'm confident that I can make it, and be a sysadmin/tier 3 support within 5 years or so.

Unsolicited PSA for the week:
Folks, I can't believe I have to say this. I can't believe anyone has to say this, especially to people who are otherwise perfectly reasonable or even wonderful people.
But the singular pronoun for non-binary individuals you should always default to, if you haven't explicitly been instructed otherwise, is not "it". It's "them" or "they".
No, these are not exclusively plural pronouns:
"Someone dropped their wallet! I'll turn it in for THEM."
If I didn't already know better, I'd genuinely believe that the use of "it" is a willful and deliberate act of malicious reduction, denial, and dehumanization (as I'm sure it unfortunately often is). But I also now know that perfectly well-intentioned folks with functional brains and EQ somehow fall into this trap.
If you're doing it on purpose: the world sees you for what you are.
If you're not: please friggin stop and think for a second.
Ain’t that a big ole room fulla cuddly.
