Pulmonary Fibrosis: Challenges in Diagnosis, Treatment and Management 🫁 🏥 Pulmonary fibrosis (PF) is a progressive lung disease characterised by fibrosis or scarring of the lung tissue. As the disease progresses the build-up of fibrotic tissue causes the lungs to stiffen, limiting their ability to expand and contract, resulting in declines in lung function. By far the most common type of PF is idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis (IPF), which describes PF cases for which no cause has been established. According to recent estimates, there may be around 30,000 people in the UK currently living with IPF... Time to diagnosis is the first major hurdle for those with pulmonary fibrosis. Many go un- or misdiagnosed for YEARS. Even as long as 5 or 10 years, or more. Yet "time" is critical for those living with PF. "Time" can: -- Be the difference between having a chance at extending life expectancy with one of the two approved antifibrotics or not having antifibrotic treatment available -- Allow for finding the cause of PF (if not IPF - idiopathic PF: PF with no known cause) and treating that cause in an attempt to slow progression of PF -- Allow for educating patients and their loved ones about better self care and minimizing or removing those things in their lifestyle or environment that might further progression of their PF -- Give patients and their loved ones more time to prepare for what's coming; emotionally, financially, personally (allowing for filling those "bucket list" items) Time to diagnosis can be everything to someone living with PF. Help reduce time to diagnosis by sharing this great infographic provided by Chest and Three Lakes Foundation and also find the very best in pulmonary fibrosis education and support through the Breathe Support Network at www.BreatheSupport.org. https://lnkd.in/g7sQk2Qb #LIVEwithPF #timetoPFdiagnosis #pulmonaryfibrosis #BreatheSupport

Knowing the signs and early intervention is key to accessing early interventions that can reduce disease progression #pulmonaryfibrosis
Did you know that diagnosis of Interstitial Lung Disease–including pulmonary fibrosis–can be delayed by up to two years? Pulmonary fibrosis causes scarring and stiffening of the lung tissue making it increasingly more difficult to breathe. The common symptoms are non-specific and can mimic other conditions such as COPD and heart failure. This Pulmonary Fibrosis Awareness Month (#PFAM) @lungfoundation and @cre-pf are encouraging Aussies to not dismiss the signs of pulmonary fibrosis and to get their symptoms investigated by their GP.
