My first few years in brokerage, I was in the office every night until 7, 8, or even 9 PM. I couldn't even imagine leaving the office before 7. I had a big goals and knew I needed to bust my ass if I wanted to hit them. I also knew that unlike most careers, this one doesn't compensate you for showing up. Only for doing deals. The more hours I worked, the closer I'd be to closing a deal and seeing a return on my most important investment, my time. I also knew that if I looked at this job like a 9 to 5 then I might as well just work a 9 to 5 and earn a salary elsewhere because this business doesn't compensate you for working like an employee. It compensates you for working like an entrepreneur. If I worked 8 hours day I'd just be my wasting time and potentially years of my life. Again, this is just how I did it. As brokers, we're all independent contractors, so we can decide how we want to spend our time.

20 minutes of my life I will never get back….. Just took a call from a client I had never worked with before. Firstly spoke about the role in depth and the catalyst for them looking for a new Chartered Cost Manager. A minimum of 2 years post chartership, experience with Resi and fit-out, strong consultancy background etc. Went through the role in some length and spoke about terms and all agreed. Eventually moved on to locations, flexibility and salary………………. At first I thought that I had heard it wrong. I then had to clarify that they required all of the above. Eventually after explaining they were a minimum of £10k light we decided we were far too far apart to agree so had to turn away the business. My questions is this; How much money should a Chartered QS/Cost Manager with 4-5 years experience (at least 2 of which is post Chartership) expect in London? We can't get anyone who is of the same calibre, professionalism and high standards as you, we're really struggling without you, we need you back!!' Have you ever heard a contractor be so open and honest about the impact that you've had on their business?! 🤔 We recently lost our work with this particular contractor after an employee left with no notice, he turned up to work, handed over his van keys and left!! 😯 Which gave us absolutely no time to replace him on the contract that was ending and the following contract that was beginning the day after! 😒 In the land of social housing contracts, time waits for no man, not even us!! We were absolutely gutted and it's had a really negative impact on our business! 😭 But getting that call today has made us feel valued and respected! 😁 We know that we're a good business, we know that we do a great job, and that's what helps to keep us going, finding the RIGHT people to work with and the RIGHT people to work for us!! #strata truism no. 108 If your strata manager is overworked it’s most likely because you’re cheap. An appropriate post for a Sunday. A #stratamanager is consistently sending you emails outside of hours is not great service. In fact, it’s more likely that they are on the road to #burnout. Your #ownerscorporation or #bodycorporate is about to turnover yet another manager. Here’s the rub; it’s highly unlikely that the #stratamanagement company is at fault. To provide the manager, assistant support, admin support, accounts, leadership+ops, I.T. and more costs more than $400 revenue a lot. It costs more like $650-$1000 per lot. The path to #sustainably great service and staff is paying your management company enough so that their staff don’t need an unmanageable client-load simply to keep their job financially viable. More money per property-client means they have fewer clients and you the owner get better service and more of it. Owners need to spend $2-3 per day to protect, manage and value their $638k+ apartment. And #management companies across the board need to start enforcing this when it’s contract renewal or annual increase time. If you think that paying an extra $100-150 each owner across 365 days hurts with #costofliving , then wait until you get a manager who is simply a bum on the seat… #burnout #dontbecheap #valueservice #sustainability
