“The experience was like getting thrown feet-first into a pool, trying to learn how to swim. Fortunately, because of the Lewis leaders in the area, I was able to learn the ins and outs of all the utilities that we were serving and tried my best to make things more successful than they had been.” Back in April 2023, Shane Greene, at that time a Supervisor in our Tennessee division, got a call from a Regional VP Matt Meador out of the blue. Some crews in another division had lost their home utility and needed to temporarily relocate from Oklahoma to South Carolina. Matt needed someone to move with the team and oversee the transition. Shane stepped up to the plate. Another time, Shane was asked to help another division with bidding for a utility contract. His division does a lot of bidding, so without hesitation he and another supervisor traveled to Indiana to teach the division their bidding process and cross-check their bids. These are just a couple of examples of Shane’s leadership here at Lewis. Thanks to his military background, Shane is used to going into new organizations with new personnel and fixing what’s going wrong while reinforcing what’s going well. So, when different divisions in the company need help with special projects, Shane is the one they call. Shane says the special projects he’s involved in can sometimes be a challenge, but he always finds the divisions he works with willing to help. He says what’s great about working at Lewis is that the company’s mission and operating principles connect everyone, and that makes it easy for him to step into different divisions and assist in any way he can. “We share common morals and values, and we all want to see the mission through,” he says. “It doesn’t matter which division you go to, we’re all speaking the same language. We all want to get the job done right.” To learn more about how we do leadership differently here at Lewis, visit https://hubs.ly/Q02g9J3y0. #LeadershipInAction #EmployeeOwners #PowerON

I just finished ‘Discovery Day’ at the company where I work as an IT contractor. We explored various departments and gained insights into the business operations. During discussions led by the business leaders, I found myself pondering the question, "Does our work define us?" While it’s a complex notion, I believe that our work is indeed a reflection of who we are, but it doesn’t entirely define us. Our work is more than just a means to earn a living; it’s a canvas where we paint our passions, skills, and values. Each task we undertake, every challenge we overcome, and every success we achieve contributes to the mosaic of our professional identity. For me, the essence of defining oneself through work lies in authenticity and purpose. It’s about aligning our actions with our values and aspirations. When we pursue work that resonates with our core beliefs and passions, it becomes an integral part of who we are.

Leaders stay with you whether you are in person or only connect for time to time. They stay with you as you follow their example, or a message or a vision and reflect that in your own leadership.
You will have lots of jobs but being part of an amazing team is how transformational change takes place while building lifelong friendships. I’ve had the privilege of being a part of many great teams including the team that led the Colorado Department of Transportation. Two of the amazing leaders from that team have gone on to #leadership roles with the City and County of Denver. Joshua Laipply was the best Chief Engineer in the country when we worked together and now is the Chief Projects Officer for CCD. Amy Ford is the Executive Director of the Transportation and Infrastructure for Denver. She is a glutton for punishment having worked with me at AECOM and the Intelligent Transportation Society of America but will do great things for Denver especially around #safety. It’s so rewarding to see great people move onward and upward.

Earlier this week, our EMEA employee led Advancing Professionals Business Resource Council hosted an insightful conversation with Teresa Parker, Northern Trust President – EMEA. Covering her inspiring and impressive 42-year career at Northern Trust, Teresa inspired over 400 of our next generation leaders by sharing key insights on navigating a corporate environment, her early career days all the way through to becoming an executive; identifying opportunities for career progression; career challenges and lessons learnt; and the ever-evolving landscape of Northern Trust as an organization, and the broader financial services industry. “From a career perspective, it’s important to understand what motivates you and to spend time thinking about what additional skills you need to get and how to go about getting those. Whether it’s taking a different job, seeking feedback from other people, or asking for coaching in a specific area. Those two components have been really important in my career: doing what I like, and continually seeking ways to develop my skills and leadership style.” Teresa Parker. Happy Leadership in Action Friday! This week, we’re introducing you to Leonardo Betancourt, a Supervisor who’s been at Lewis since 2011. Leo has been instrumental in the growth of his division, taking it from 2 General Forepersons and 6 crews to 3 General Forepersons and 18 crews. He’s known for being fully engaged with his utility partners and Craftworkers, and he says he does it by listening to people’s needs and addressing them. Leo says his prior role as a Safety Specialist helped him find success in his new position. He got to see a lot of the division’s needs firsthand as he worked with different crews and put that knowledge to use once he became a Supervisor. One of the first thing he did was analyze the utility’s current plan and identify ways things could be improved. Utilities are all about providing reliable service to their customers, and Leo knew his suggestions would help them do that. Another thing he did when he first became Supervisor was meet with all of his crews and get to know them better. He asked them things like what they liked about their job and what they’d like to see improved. He used that knowledge to make improvements within his division. Expanding the division wasn’t always smooth sailing, but Leo never gave up. He says he received plenty of support from divisional leadership that kept him going with things got tough. “I learned I’m not alone. I’m not an island,” he says.
