New research led by Frank Duca, associate professor in the University of Arizona Department of Animal and Comparative Biomedical Sciences in the College of Agriculture, Life and Environmental Sciences, suggests that consuming foods rich in beta-glucan, a type of fiber found in oats and barley, can reduce body weight and obesity. The study, published in The Journal of Nutrition, analyzed the impact of different fibers on gut microbiota – the community of tiny microbes living in the digestive system that are responsible for breaking down the food we eat. During #NationalNutritionMonth, we'll be highlighting majors offered within Purdue Nutrition Science. Next up is the nutrition science major. In this major, students learn how to conduct research, rooted in the basic sciences, to better understand the relationship between diet and the development, progression and prevention of diseases such as diabetes, cardiovascular disease and cancer. These findings are then used by dietitians and physicians to provide evidence-based nutrition advice to their patients. ➡ Learn more about this and other nutrition science majors: https://lnkd.in/gzkwPD7G #PurdueHHS #PurdueUniversity #NutritionScience

I'm excited to announce that the first publication from my PhD research is here! Our paper, titled "Evidence-Based Practice Competencies among Nutrition Professionals and Students: A Systematic Review," has been published in the Journal of Nutrition. It evaluates the evidence-based practice competencies among nutrition professionals and students that are reported in the literature. We found that none of the included studies assessed two of the six key evidence-based practice competencies: a) determining the ‘effect size/magnitude of effect’ of treatment or exposure, and b) determining the ‘certainty of evidence’ for treatment or exposure. These findings are impactful enough to have warranted an accompanying editorial!
