Water water everywhere but nary a drop to drink. Permian basin oil production is a misnomer. More water is produced than oil from many of the current producing formations targeted by horizontal drilling and hydraulic fracturing (not fracking) in the Permian Basin of west Texas and New Mexico. Until it is more expensive to purchase fresh water and dispose produced water, or prohibited by new laws, recycling is not likely to provide a solution in the Permian Basin. I have an idea, why not explore for oil reservoirs that contain less water or adjust completion techniques to minimize fracture growth that intercept saline aquifers?
