When Bobbi Smith arrived in Texas, it was the culmination of a lifelong dream to farm. After returning from seven years in Afghanistan where she worked as a Civil Affairs Officer and contractor with the Army, Bobbi ventured into agritourism to revive a ranch, naming it Rockin’ Bar B Ranch. Part of that revival included restoration of a dried-up lake with help from a grant from American Farmland Trust’s Brighter Future Fund. With hard work and determination, the ranch continues to regain life! Read Bobbi’s story: https://bit.ly/3WN0NGS.
The Striped Bass is the state fish of Maryland. Advocating for the betterment of it and for conservation is the only thing we can do to preserve it for future generations.
Many businesses have been affected by proposed and implemented regulations over the past decade. As Marylanders, today we must make the best effort, to protect our fishery. It is important that the next generation has the opportunity to experience it tomorrow.

The Garden Army: Cultivating Hope Through Nature
Did you know that getting your hands dirty can actually improve your mental well-being? The Garden Army, a community farm in West Sussex, England, is harnessing the power of nature to help people of all ages struggling with mental health challenges.
Through therapeutic gardening activities, volunteers and visitors can connect with the earth, learn valuable skills, and find a sense of purpose. The fresh air, exercise, and connection to nature all contribute to a sense of well-being.
The Garden Army's mission extends beyond rows of vegetables. They offer a variety of programs and events, fostering a supportive community for those seeking connection.
Here are some of the ways The Garden Army is making a difference:
Therapeutic gardening: Providing a space for people to connect with nature and find solace.
Volunteer opportunities: Offering individuals a chance to give back while gaining new skills.
Educational events: Promoting sustainable agriculture and the benefits of nature for mental health.
The Garden Army's vision for the future is ambitious! They're aiming to expand their services and create a self-sufficient haven for healing, including:
Tailored education programs: Providing opportunities for people re-entering the workforce.
Alternative education: Offering a nurturing environment for children who struggle in traditional settings.
A comprehensive support network: Building a network that provides training, employment opportunities, and a supportive community, all on the farm.
I recently had the pleasure of interviewing Tom, the founder of The Garden Army, on the Agriton YouTube channel. In the interview, we discussed their philosophy, the impact of nature therapy, and their exciting plans for the future.
Whether you're struggling with mental health yourself or interested in learning more about the positive impact of agriculture, this interview is a must-watch! thank you Tom Morphew for your time

For some wildlife, disturbances caused by military training activities are actually key to survival. The rare eastern regal fritillary butterfly is found only at Fort Indiantown Gap in Pennsylvania, which is home to one of the largest expanses of native warm-season grasslands in the Northeastern U.S.
This habitat requires periodic disturbance, at the right time and intensity, to keep the butterfly going strong. https://ow.ly/vO6u50R9xR7
Rural PA deserved better research, planning and transparency, and a wide variety of people and organizations -- including U.S. and state Senators and Representatives from both sides of the aisle -- pushed back to demand it. I’m really proud and thankful for that, and appreciate the U.S. Air Force's and National Guard's decision not to move forward on the low-level flights.
The PA Wilds is a very patriotic region, so much so that patriotism is called out as a theme in our brand values and memorialized in resources like the PA Wilds Design Guide for Community Character Stewardship. This was never about whether we support our military. This was about believing in the future of rural PA, and in the value of appropriate planning and community engagement for something as potentially consequential as the proposed Duke Low MOA, which posed a real threat to the region’s $1.9B tourism and outdoor recreation sectors, and the many rural small businesses and families who depend on these industries for their livelihoods, in addition to other potential environmental and quality of life impacts.

California Least Terns at Risk
🐦 💖
The California Least Terns are an endangered migratory seabird species that nest in colonies on the ground along parts of the coast of California. They rely heavily on open, sandy dune habitats both for nesting and for the anchovies and smelt in nearby waters for food. Increasing human disturbances, like development and beachgoers, along with other sources of habitat loss, like sea level rise, forces the terns to nest in urban environments and in concentrated areas so that access to food would be preserved. This, in turn, makes them very vulnerable to predation by threats ranging from feral cats to crows to raccoons. An example would be the tarmac at the closed Alameda Naval Air Station, which supports a successful colony but must be managed annually by the USFWS and its volunteers to limit urban predators.

In the United States, manufacturers, producers and importers pay a federal excise tax on firearms, ammunition, archery, and angling equipment. Additional taxes are also contributed from that portion of the federal fuel tax that is attributable to motorboat and small engine fuel usage. In 2023, more than $1.3 billion was collected, distributed, and matched with federal funds from State agencies for supported habitat restoration, species research, hunter and angler education, improved access for outdoor activities, and more.

Everything is connected.
When communities are faced with issues like extreme drought, it's often nature that delivers a solution. We can learn a lot about the world around us by looking at the soil under our feet - or, how the plants along a riverbank help to clean water coming in and also prevent flooding.
That's why the Foundation for America's Public Lands has invested important seed funding to help Western communities trouble-shoot growing pressures from drought. Whether it's putting tech to work in ranching communities, or supporting infrastructure and restoration, each little glimmer has a meaningful impact across the entire Colorado River Basin.
🎉 EXCITING NEWS: Today, the Foundation announced the launch of its new Drought Resilience Fund with a $2.4M investment to help boost drought resilience on public lands and waters in the Colorado River Basin!
The first two grants will help BLM partners in Colorado and Arizona expand innovative, community-led initiatives to combat severe drought, secure drinking water, and improve the health of our lands and waters.
