Last week the Quatrième students attended the Saint Germain Livrodrome. Marketed as a "parc d'attractions littéraires" the Livrodrome consisted of stands introducing students to literature, publishing, and every aspect related to books (audiobooks, film adaptations, podcasts . . .). Our students were able to explore by themselves and then had a workshop with a bilingual poet and translator, who led the students in their own bilingual poetic exploration.

As a former English teacher, maybe it’s no surprise I like books 📚! So happy World Book Day! Reading is a joy for me. Yet not everyone has the same taste for books. And that’s ok. There are many other ways to enjoy what is available, through audiobooks and podcasts, for example, as well as online, magazines, comic books… the list goes on! We are all different, and have different ways of doing things. For me, books help my learning, relaxation, and growth, as well as creating a peaceful, personal space to be comfortable in my own world. I love fiction and non-fiction in equal measure. Of course, I love it when this kind of review appears in my inbox… But these few words reveal a much bigger story as we continue to think about the future of nonfiction narration in the face of synthetic voices. I'm someone who specialises in nonfiction narration - who loves the challenge of lifting heavy words off the page and turning the whole thing into a performance. I'm passionate about what I bring to my nonfiction titles, so it makes me sad and frustrated when I hear people arguing that nonfiction is something an AI can do, but that fiction narrators are "safe for now". They're missing the point: the thing that makes a nonfiction book entertaining and listenable is the skill of the narrator. "Necessarily dry text" is a stock-in trade for me - whether I'm reading a nonfiction book, or a deeply technical e-learning script or medical piece. Breathing life into words which were never designed to read aloud is what sets me and my peers apart. The little flourishes, asides and nuances of speech are what break up the facts and make them interesting. And those aren't things that synthetic voices do well. We also have to cope with sentences that sometimes run to half a page, and that we need to have a "sense" of in order to make the narration itself make sense. (Have fun with all that, robots!) Bottom line: this reviewer gave the "story" 1 out of 5 stars, the book an overall score of 3, but awarded me 4 stars for the narration. Listeners do care about how their nonfiction titles are narrated, and producers would do well to continue to listen… #audiobooks #nonfiction #narrator #britishnarrator #nonfictionnarrator #nonfiction #narration #aivoices #ainarration
