Join us at "Kick-starting the WHO Global Oral Health Action Plan" an #UNGA side-event on #OralHealth, #NCDs and #UHC which brings together health ministers, WHO colleagues and experts on policy initiatives, country perspectives and different policy approaches towards expanding UHC coverage to include essential oral health care. There is a critical need for a health system approach when integrating NCD services into #PHC and #UHC: 7 out of 10 of the main contributors to global deaths were from #NCDs in 2019 & more than 50% of the world is affected by untreated oral diseases. The WHO will showcase the newly released Global Oral Health Action Plan 2023-2030 and how its action-oriented guidance can support countries in achieving UHC for all that include oral diseases prevention and control. A key message was on the importance of integrating oral health care using the PHC approach as a means to make progress on the access and affordability of essential oral health services. During the Crimean War (1853-1856), thousands of British Soldiers were dying. The British Govt. sent Florence Nightingale, a nurse with a team of 50 other nurses and nuns to care for the wounded soldiers. They worked day and night and still, soldiers were dying. Nightingale noted that many of the soldiers were dying not from battle wounds but from diseases like typhus, typhoid, cholera, and dysentery. So along with compassionate care, she also started giving importance to hygiene at the hospitals and kept a clear communication line between the battleground and the empire. She made the British Govt. make a camp hospital at the war sites and asked the govt to improve sanitation, so they did. Sending a team just for sanitation. While in the first 3 months, 4000+ soldiers died, the deaths reduced significantly after the sanitation efforts. Although the world of microorganisms such as bacteria and “small animals” was already imagined and worked upon in the 17th century by Robert Hooke and Antoni van Leeuwenhoek, People still have not adopted the practice of hygiene to keep themselves healthy. People like Nightingale made hygiene commonplace at the care sites like hospitals and nursing homes. This practice saved countless lives. She is called the Founder of Modern Nursing. (Many hospitals and nursing homes are named after her, apart from multiple awards.) China has recently launched the second provincial pilot program for medical service pricing reform in three regions, aiming to optimize the fee structure across public hospitals. The country has also established five rounds of development plans of National Medical Centers (NMC) and National Regional Medical Centers (NRMC) to develop local healthcare service capabilities and cater to regional healthcare needs. 👉 This new round of development has increased the total number of NMCs to 14 and NRMCs to 125. 👉 In 2024, the country will focus on AIDS prevention and vaccination initiatives to prevent and control of major infectious diseases. 👉 All of this is taking place amid a strong rebound in hospitalizations in 2023, with tertiary hospitals leading growth. Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF) have been true and consistent in speaking out on the horrific escalation of violence against Palestinian civilians since the Hamas attack on October 7. They have just published a brilliant, critical and sobering case study (link in the chat) reflecting on where they went wrong in their response to the genocide in Rwanda, on the eve of the 30 year anniversary. It is a sharp look at their initial silence; reflecting on the responsibility of organisations to stand up and speak out, of the psychology of silence and the over correction toward ‘technical’ posturing on crimes against humanity. We are of course seeing many organisations, politicians and actors scramble to call out the crimes now that Western aid workers have been tragically targeted and killed, just as we saw after the murders of the ‘Balibo Five’ - Australian journalists - by Indonesian troops in East Timor. As pressure builds we’ll see actors co-opt the narrative, to focus attention on a single bad actor in an attempt to ameliorate the actions of our peers, colleagues, donors and governments. If we’re truly serious about justice and peace, we’re going to have to ‘call-in’ and ‘call-out’ a group of powerful actors who will right now emerge as a dominant force in shaping memory culture that will affect the past, present, future. Why do organisations behave as they do? Why do some in our sector engage in silence or shaming of those that speak?
