If you have a moment, please read my recent blog post about the role @AmeriCorps has played in my life and the role it plays in communities affected by disasters. How has service shaped your career?
Today, we honor those lost and the sacrifices made on September 11, 2001. In the days, weeks, and months following the attacks, hundreds of thousands of people volunteered to help support the rescue and recovery efforts. Since then, the September 11 National Day of Service and Remembrance was created to continue the spirit of service to honor the victims of the tragedy. At SBP, alongside AmeriCorps, we honor those who serve and recognize the power of community in disaster recovery. In our latest blog post, we share why service matters and how AmeriCorps plays a crucial role in strengthening our nation. 🚨 Extremist Actors – Co-opting Hurricane Helene Relief Efforts 🚨 In the aftermath of Hurricane Helene, extremist groups have been quick to exploit the disaster, positioning themselves as faster and more effective than agencies like FEMA. This is a strategic move often used by these groups to spread their ideology, recruit vulnerable individuals, and undermine trust in government institutions. These groups see disaster zones as opportunities to fuel distrust in the government, deepen societal divides, and spread hate. Their actions not only undermine legitimate recovery efforts but also pose a serious threat to community cohesion. 🛑 How can we combat this? Clear, fact-based communication from authorities and a strong focus on community resilience are essential to countering these divisive narratives. Let's stay informed and united. #DisasterResponse #HurricaneHelene #CommunityResilience #FEMA #Extremism #Disinformation #NCRecovery
