Be like the bison: steadfast and unyielding in the face of adversity. In the vast expanse of the wilderness, the bison roams with a sense of purpose and determination. It faces harsh winters, blistering summers, and unforgiving landscapes, yet it persists, undeterred by the challenges that lie ahead. Like the bison, we too can embody resilience and strength. In times of hardship, we stand firm, refusing to be swept away by the storms that rage around us. We draw upon our inner reserves of courage and tenacity, pushing forward with unwavering resolve. But the bison also teaches us the importance of community and connection. In the wild, they gather in herds, providing support and protection to one another. Similarly, we find strength in unity, leaning on our loved ones and allies for guidance and support during trying times. So let us be like the bison: bold, resilient, and fiercely determined. Let us face life's challenges head-on, knowing that with perseverance and solidarity, we can weather any storm that comes our way.

Last year, we shared our first Justice, Equity, Diversity & Inclusion Organization Progress Report, where we outlined the accomplishments that Conservation Corps Minnesota & Iowa has made to advance our JEDI initiatives and goals that we outlined in 2021, as well as the areas where we are looking to improve next. This year we checked in again on our progress towards those goals, and outlined them in a new progress report. Years ago, anthropologist Margaret Mead was asked by a student what she considered to be the first sign of civilization in a culture. The student expected Mead to talk about fishhooks or clay pots or grinding stones. But no. Mead said that the first sign of civilization in an ancient culture was a femur (thighbone) that had been broken and then healed. Mead explained that in the animal kingdom, if you break your leg, you die. You cannot run from danger, get to the river for a drink or hunt for food. You are meat for prowling beasts. No animal survives a broken leg long enough for the bone to heal. A broken femur that has healed is evidence that someone has taken time to stay with the one who fell, has bound up the wound, has carried the person to safety and has tended the person through recovery. Helping someone else through difficulty is where civilization starts .We are at our best when we serve others. The celebration of Christopher Columbus' has been "sanitized" by school districts - omitting or downplaying the devastating impact of Columbus' arrival on the Indigenous peoples of America. Research shows that K-12 schools tend to teach about #NativeAmericans as they existed only in the past - and don't incorporate both the past and current stories of Native peoples to teach about their cultures, histories, and traditions accurately. In order to help #NativeCommunities prepare and recover from disasters, you first need to understand and consider their cultures.
