Curious about Bio 4/5224 Science of Vision at Oakland University? What are we learning about now in week three? Amazing things! This week: 1) We continue with the front of the eye just inside the cornea. We delve into the "anterior segment" of the eye, aqueous outflow, and Glaucoma and further understand the compartments in the eye. Then lens biochemistry, development, physiological optics, and Cataracts. 2) To start students thinking about color vision, which we will cover in detail later, I dropped a few new "colorful" tunes to the class' "Vibes of 4/5224" playlist on YouTube. We will make sure that everyone has started to read "Island of the Colorblind" by Oliver Sacks. Color, black and white, lines, stripes, shades, contrast and brightness. What do we see and what is better, or not, when it comes to perception of the world around us? 3) Also introducing the "Bio 4/5224 Science of Vision" video collection on YouTube. It has a few videos now and it will get more as the term progresses. This collection supplements the actual class work and especially concerns taking vision science out of the classroom and into humanity. I am thrilled to share that my first scientific publication is now accessible on arXiv. Over the last 1.5 years, I dedicated myself to this project under the guidance of Prof. Andreas M. Menzel at Otto-von-Guericke University Magdeburg, where I pursued junior studies during my final year of high school. In this paper, we study the stochastic motion of a particle in a shear-thinning environment with the help of a formal analogy between the associated Fokker-Planck equation and the Schrödinger equation for a quantum-mechanical oscillator in a nonharmonic Pöschl-Teller potential. The article is scheduled for publication in Physical Review E, by the American Physical Society. Mr. Rodriguez's class struggles to grasp complex scientific concepts through traditional lectures. PAL Solution: PAL analyzes class data to identify areas of confusion. It recommends interactive simulations and virtual labs that Mr. Rodriguez can incorporate. Recently Published: An Ecological Theory of Learning Transfer in Human Activity This is open access at: Lintern, G., Kugler, P.N., & Motavalli, A. (2024). An Ecological Theory of Learning Transfer in Human Activity. Theoretical Issues in Ergonomics Science, xx:x, xxx-xxx, DOI: 10.1080/1463922X.2024.2365429. I have been bothered for many years about how narrow existing transfer theories are and how they fail to account for strong transfer effects outside the constrained set of tasks they consider. A major problem has been that behavioral science has conceptualized similarity in a superficial way. Here we conceptualize similarity in terms more consistent with geometry, biology, and dynamical systems theory on the way to constructing a theory of learning transfer for authentic, multi-faceted tasks such as landing an airplane, executing a tennis backhand, and inserting a cannula into a peripheral vein of a patient.

Exciting news—I'm defending my thesis titled "Fabrication of Green Light-Emitting-Diodes using Halide Perovskites." 🌟 Join me on Tuesday morning, December 19th, 2023, at 10:00 AM in the Conference Room (Salle de Conférence) at XLIM 3/ Collège des Écoles Doctorales - Université de Limoges. Here's a glimpse of what my thesis explores: I've been delving into making bright, efficient, and reliable green Perovskite LEDs. I did three main things: 1) Figured out how to make the conventional PeLEDs more reliable. 2) Played with new perovskite quantum dots mixed with polymers to make the PeLEDs perform better. 3) Utilized photonic structures to (hypothetically) make the PeLEDs emit light more efficiently, although we faced a few challenges. The process of science - how do we get to Evidence-based practice? I love teaching this lesson; whether it be in Research Methods, Ex Phys, Applied Sports Science, etc. In Reserach Methods, last week we talked about what is science and research, etc. And how do we do it? ANd that you need not be a ‘white lab coat researcher’ … think Plan | Do | Study | Act (Program Evaluation/ Quality Improvement). Today we did our “Instant Animals” experiments … we will follow this up with a Consensus Conference of the 5 ‘research groups’ and explore causal criteria.

This semester I'm teaching Principles of Plasma Diagnostics (based on Prof. Hutchinson's classic textbook) to 30 MIT students, with nine more students joining us over Zoom from Columbia University. As an exercise on the first day of class, I drew this large density/temperature/magnetic field parameter space, and asked the students fill out the region they study, and what diagnostics they use. The idea here is to show how vast the parameter space is: we span 16 orders of magnitude in density! PS. I love my "luminous color" Hagoromo chalk for this sort of thing!
