Environmental DNA analysis has transformed ecological and conservation research, offering a non-invasive and cost-effective way to detect species. Yet, we must address its limitations, including imperfect sampling and primer bias. Integrating eDNA with traditional methods ensures a comprehensive approach. #eDNA #Monitoring #Biodiversity #Science #Research

How do we measure ecosystems at risk? So many of our ecosystems are at risk, reflecting changes in biodiversity and ongoing decline in their condition. Assessing which ecosystems are at most risk is a vital task as it helps us understand where to prioritise investment and effort. There are various methods to do this. This week, Nature published a paper titled 'Synergies and complementarities between ecosystem accounting and the Red List of Ecosystems' discussing the way that the two primary standards can work together to help us describe ecosystems effectively. Our Director, Carl Obst, was a co-author on the paper, contributing his expertise as the lead author and editor of the SEEA EA to the mix. 👉 Read the paper here: https://lnkd.in/g8UghF7g 👉 Read our take here: https://lnkd.in/g4pY8t6E #Ecosystems #NatureRisk #Nature #Biodiversity #SEEA

🌍🎥 New ECONOVO Film: Understanding and Shaping the Biosphere of the Future 🌱✨ Today, we’re proud to share a short film about our work at the Center for Ecological Dynamics in a Novel Biosphere (ECONOVO). Human-driven changes are creating new ecological realities, often far removed from what we’ve known in the past. At ECONOVO, we study these novel ecosystems to understand their impacts on biodiversity and biosphere functioning—and to explore how we can manage them for a better future. 🌿🌎 🎬 What are novel #ecosystems, and why should we care? 💡 How can our research contribute to global sustainability and resilience? These are some of the questions we address in the film. #ECONOVO #Biodiversity #NovelEcosystems #GlobalChange #AarhusUniversity #Grundforskningsfonden #novelecosystems #rewilding

Our latest research from the #GES4SEAS Horizon project, "Management of #Jellyfish Outbreaks to Achieve #GoodEnvironmentalStatus", has just been published in Frontiers in Ocean Sustainability. We explored the #impacts, #monitoring techniques, and #management strategies for jellyfish outbreaks. Here are some key highlights: -Monitoring Advances: Various methods like nets, acoustic surveys, remote aerial and underwater imaging, molecular methods, and citizen science are essential for effective jellyfish management. -Management Strategies: Existing solutions include anti-jellyfish nets, early warning systems, and the introduction of natural predators. -Biodiversity Impact: Jellyfish outbreaks can harm ecosystems via predation and competition but also provide ecosystem services, acting as biological regulators. -Sustainable Solutions: The study emphasizes the need for anticipatory and cost-efficient management strategies to mitigate future jellyfish crises and promote a sustainable blue economy.

"I recently had the privilege of filming with Dr James Williams, a leading expert on biodiversity, for a project with the Royal Society of Biology. His insights into the alarming rate of species extinction and the urgent need for action were both sobering and inspiring. What resonated most with me was his call for scientists to become better communicators, ensuring that their critical research reaches beyond the lab and empowers individuals and policymakers to make informed decisions. This project reinforced my belief in the power of film to educate, inspire, and drive positive change." - Jay Carter-Coles, Multimedia Producer & Technology Lead at Content With Purpose.
