Last week, while attending The Diana Legacy Award, I got as close as I probably ever will to Prince William — just a few metres away! The CEO of this organisation, Dr Tessy Ojo CBE, has been a role model for me, showing by example that leaders must remain human and accessible. Even though she spends time with royalty and hugely influential people, she addressed me by name and made me feel seen amongst extraordinary people. Her passion radiates and spreads to those she comes across! The awards evening was truly inspirational — 20 young people from 13 different countries were recognised for their ideas to make this world a better place. Every idea was exceptional, but I will name two that stood out for me in particular. The first one is the design of an outage guard bulb that continues to run for 10 hours after load shedding. As an engineer also hailing from Africa, this solution is incredibly practical for these countries. The other idea I loved was that of the library created at Southeast Asia’s biggest landfill site where over 1,500 books are now held. All in aid of driving education efforts in the community. I strongly believe education is the answer to many of the humanitarian crises we currently face and am collaborating with friends, myself, to create more libraries in Zimbabwe. Since 1876, Ericsson has also been building a lasting legacy in changing lives through technology. I look forward to seeing how many more lives we can change for the better through the partnerships we get involved in, here at Ericsson. My question to you (and also me) is this; what legacy are we creating? Will we be remembered after we are gone? From the 11th to the 14th of December, I joined colleagues from the Embassy of Switzerland in South Africa on a transformative journey to provide a rural community (Mukomaasinanndu) with access to clean and healthy water, aiming to transform their village into an SDG (Sustainable Development Goals) village. This collaboration stemmed from an essay I submitted for the 52nd St. Gallen Symposium earlier this year. It wasn't merely an essay; it served as the foundation for a lasting relationship between the Swiss and myself. A water purification plant, valued at over R500,000 and engineered by an African professional, has been successfully installed in the village. This facility is dedicated to ensuring the supply of clean and healthy water to the community. Our initiatives extend beyond mere rural development; we are committed to addressing critical community issues through applied research and innovation. The necessity of this project is underscored by alarming statistics, specifically the highest rates of mortality and morbidity among children under the age of 5, attributed to diarrhoea and respiratory problems. Our work is not only about enhancing rural living conditions but also about making a meaningful impact on the health and well-being of the community through practical research and innovative solutions. Interestingly, I discovered that the car we used for our trip to Venda was the Swiss ambassador's vehicle. Throughout the journey, I happened to be seated in the ambassador's designated seat, as if being invited to his residence was not enough. For a young woman from a village like myself, this is undoubtedly a dream come true—a significant milestone. I mean who doesn’t want to be associated with the richest country in the world? This collaboration holds immense value for me, as I am poised to contribute significantly to Swiss projects through applied research and innovation. As an agricultural economist and a researcher, I acknowledge that my role extends beyond myself; it is about serving the people/communities. This collaboration means everything to me, as I wholeheartedly engage in activities that align with my passions and values. The Chief also gifted me with some 10 hectares of land. Hey LinkedIn Fam! It's been a while since I shared some updates on this platform. As we bid farewell to 2023, I can't help but take a moment to celebrate the incredible journey I’ve had this year. As a professional who works in the development space, it's been a year filled with meaningful activities, milestones, and, most importantly, impact! In the area of Monitoring and Evaluation, we've not just crunched numbers; we've woven stories of change and progress. From tracking project outcomes to fine-tuning strategies, each activity has been a step forward in our collective mission. Working alongside a phenomenal team ( Pamela Uzoma, Rasheed Ajao PMP, Terhemen Agabo, Adefunke Adeyeye and others) has made this year exceptionally great. Our collaborative efforts have turned challenges into opportunities and setbacks into stepping stones. Together, we've not only met but exceeded our goals, proving that a united front can conquer any hurdle! I am also proud to share that the projects I have been privileged to handle, have impacted young people in different ways. Whether it's promoting leadership or enhancing sustainable practices amongst entrepreneurs, the ripple effect of our work is truly heartening. In the same spirit of gratitude, I also bagged my Master’s degree in Public health ( I’ll be dedicating a post to this later). Anyways, here's to each one of you who contributed to making 2023 a year of significance! Dear network, as I want to start my week, I have received many messages of congratulations for my one year of work within the Denis & Lenora Foretia Foundation. I am grateful for your signs of recognition. When I was onboarded as the #Director of #Programs and #Strategy on August 1, 2023, I joined an amazing, young and dynamic team, with the support of the Board of Directors and Co-Chairs Denis Foretia, MD.MPH.MBA and Lenora Ebule, MBA . After a year within the Foundation, we have achieved notable feats. The Nkafu Policy Institute, the Foundation's think tank, has managed to get in touch with peers to initiate the construction of a consortium of think tanks in the #ECCAS in order to carry out collaborative research to discuss the strengths and weaknesses of the environment of think tanks and CSOs, particularly in the areas of #economy, #governance, #democracy, #health, #peace and #security. Together with other think tank leaders, we are pooling our efforts to strengthen the institutional capacities of their leaders and researchers and to amplify advocacy with policy makers to generate more impact. The thematics we are putting on the table mainly concern #Informality, #Inequality, #GenderEquity, #Accountability, #IntegratedGovernance, #IntegratedTrade, #Resilience, #PrivateHealthInsurance, #TheFutureOfWork, #Free Economy, #Shrinking or #Closing of #CivicSpace, etc. The main objective is to ensure that the landscape of think tanks and #CSOs in #ECCAS raises their level of efficiency compared to those of the other 7 RECs in Africa. The process continues and we benefit from the support of Open Society Foundations, Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit GmbH, International Development Research Centre (IDRC), Templeton World Charity Foundation, Atlas Network and many others. In addition, the activities of our #Small #Business and #Entrepreneurship #Centre (SBEC) have helped to strengthen the capacities of Cameroonian SMEs to enable them to emerge from #informality, strengthen their organizational and managerial capacities, tax civic-mindedness, value creation and #profitability. We are also working to strengthen the entrepreneurial ecosystem and the business climate through advocacy. This is made possible thanks to the support of the Rising Tide Group and the John Templeton Foundation. Together we can make it happen

Last Friday, I was delighted to attend the MEDAYS forum in Tangier, considered an international geostrategic event in Africa and the Arab world. The panel I attended revolved around the subject of investment in the healthcare sector, which one of the speakers summed up in a very essential and pertinent question: what could be more urgent than this? I was impressed by dr. Azhadi's speech, which covered several aspects of the subject in just a few minutes, the most important of which, i think, was the one dealing with the fact that the socio-economic issues raised by this subject depend first and foremost on the political will to give priority to health, and that this requires a participatory approach in order to build a resilient and robust system in a context of globalization, the threat of which is constantly increasing. In this same panel, i also discovered a piece of information that i had either totally overlooked or never paid much attention to: only 50% of the african population has access to basic healthcare. this is a clear demonstration of the inequality of access to healthcare for all. In short, this sector needs urgent intervention by drawing up an objective and comprehensive roadmap.
