Next week, I will be using my platform to amplify other voices that support and engage with me. It's crucial to me because I've noticed some well-known DEI figures framing narratives with singular certainty, overlooking vital aspects like the impact of anti-Black bias on DEI efforts. Blaming practitioners, sending out missives that miss key factors, and diluting the work to an "all lives matter" (though all lives do matter, not all those lives are similarly situated) approach disregards the diverse challenges we face. To combat intellectual narcissism, I'm exploring and showcasing alternative perspectives. Meet Mike Green, Co-founder of Common Ground Conversations on Race in America, with his wife, Emily. Mike is a historian with deep knowledge of how our past impacts our present. Our recent discussion delved into the significant differences in voting patterns between white and Black women. This topic is particularly relevant with the upcoming election, which could potentially set women's rights back by decades. On this day in 1920, the 19th Amendment was ratified, securing a monumental victory for women’s rights and for the power of democracy in America. Make no mistake about it, Black women are a powerful force in the American political system. Their political power at the polls and on the ballot continues to grow and is increasingly recognized as the force it is. Starting with Shirley Chisholm's historic election to Congress in 1968, Black women have continued to make their mark in politics and social justice. Despite facing gender and racial barriers, Black women are committed to creating significant change in marginalized, underserved communities nationwide and inspiring other women to follow in their footsteps. There are newer classes of Black women in Congress who are rejecting business as usual and not waiting on the party endorsement. They won’t be bullied and silenced. Who are the five Black women featured below? If you don’t know them - you should. They are among the women changing our nation’s political arena. Their journeys to political power hasn’t been easy, but they continue to push forward with determination and courage, knowing they are breaking the glass ceiling for future generations. In yet another pivotal election year, Black women continue to answer the call to ensure that the promises of our democracy are fully realized. Here's one thing that has always bothered me working on voter engagement and outreach. Assuming Black voters are a monolith. One of those assumptions has always been (by mostly those who are not black) that because so many in the Black community go to church they aren't in favor of reproductive freedom. Well unsurprisingly (to me) new polling shows: "Over 40 percent of Black women said that they are more likely to vote for a candidate who is “pro-reproductive freedom.”  That number held across age, education and political party. Thirty-five percent of self-identified Black Republican women voters said that a “pro-choice” label would make them more likely to vote for a candidate in the elections" In an election that's going to won on margins in key states, it's important to never make assumptions about any voter. Reflecting on this milestone, we're reminded of the tireless efforts of countless activists who fought for equality and justice. Suffragettes, 80x120cm, 2024 Swiss labor day: let’s recall women’s suffrage/voting rights in the U.S. & its link to civil rights. Part of the fight for women's rights, in the UK Mary Wollstonecraft wrote A Vindication of the Rights of Woman in 1792. In the US women joined the American Anti-Slavery Society led by William Garrison in 1839. But opposition remained strong, as Sojourner Truth expressed in "Ain't I a Woman?" Suffrage leaders paused activities during the Civil War to focus on the abolition of slavery - restarting in 1866 with the American Equal Rights Association (AERA), Frederick Douglass, former slave, abolitionist & civil rights activist among its leaders. 1890 the first suffrage organizations merged into the National American Woman Suffrage Association (NAWSA). Still, businesses such as Southern cotton mills opposed suffrage, fearing women voters’ drive to eliminate child labor. So they tried to convince southern politicians that they ensured white supremacy despite the 15th Amendment granting African American men the right to vote, by enfranchising educated, predominantly white, women. Black NAWSA members were excluded from the 1903 convention in New Orleans until it backtracked by refusing to adopt policies that "advocated the exclusion of any race....“, but by the dawn of the 20th century, its goal of universal suffrage was eclipsed by raging racism. With World War I, however, when women replaced men, the U.S. recognized their sacrifices with the vote. The 1920 election became the first presidential election permitting women to vote, via 19th Amendment to the U.S. Constitution. State-wise, only ratified piecemeal - as late as 1971 in Louisiana & 1984 in Mississippi. Still it did not provide suffrage to all. Restrictions on literacy & ability to pay poll taxes were used to legally exclude women & large numbers of African Americans even after the passing of the Voting Rights Act of 1965, the federal legislation that prohibits racial discrimination in voting.
