The Charities Aid Foundation (CAF) recently released its annual study reporting that the number of people regularly giving to charity in the UK fell to 58% in 2023, down from 65% in 2019. A decline in regular givers is a growing concern for charities, as they rely on a shrinking pool of supporters. So, what can we do as your fundraising partner? ◦ Continue creating genuine, meaningful connections between donors and charities, ensuring a higher retention rate of long-term supporters. ◦ Use data-driven insights to tailor our fundraising strategies to target potential givers who are most likely to commit to regular donations. ◦ Further enhance the donor experience and engagement through our welcome calling programme, increasing the likelihood of sustained giving over time. We’re here to help charities navigate these challenging times and spread the joy of giving the Zen way. 🟣✨ #charitysector #regulargiving #F2F #fundraising #teamzen #nonprofit

📈Amid a serious decline in funding - from government, local authorities and individual donations - grants from charitable foundations are one of the few funding streams that has remained stable during a time of increased demand for charities. Emily Harle's analysis in Third Sector explores how this demand is shifting upstream and the impact it is having on grantmakers. https://lnkd.in/em7qTbv6 🔍𝐊𝐞𝐲 𝐢𝐧𝐬𝐢𝐠𝐡𝐭𝐬: 1. 📊 Surge in applications: Association of Charitable Foundations members report staggering increases in application volumes – ranging from 30% to an overwhelming 100%. 2. ⚖️ Capacity constraints: grantmakers face the delicate balance of managing this surge, usually with a very small staff team, while maintaining fair, effective evaluation processes. 3. 🔄 Adaptive responses from funders: - Increasing funding allocations - Restructuring grant programmes to better align with charities' needs - Streamlining decision-making processes - Reducing administrative burden on applicants 4. ⏸️ Temporary Pauses: Some grantmakers have had to temporarily suspend new applications while implementing these essential changes. At Association of Charitable Foundations we emphasise the importance of collaboration between funders. When grantmakers consider pausing their programmes, we encourage dialogue with other funders to understand the ecosystem-wide impact of such decisions. #CharitableFunding #Philanthropy #NonprofitSector #GrantMaking #SocialImpact

This is really important strategically for our sector. #Charitable #Grantmakers by themselves won't be able to shoulder the demand entirely. Rectifying the dire state of #LocalGovernment finances but also improving #Corporate giving and #Philanthropy, getting it higher up the policy agenda has to be part of the solution in my opinion. Also getting the #DormantAssets actually deployed to communities via #CommunityWealthFund(s).

Public charities, also known as 501(c)(3)s by the IRS, must support themselves as they work on fulfilling their missions. Much of that support must come from the public. To receive public funding charities must run fundraising campaigns directed toward individual donors. Nonprofits can also apply for foundation grants. Nonprofits can also charge fees for services, sell merchandise, and sell tickets for performances. There are specific rules for ow much income may be generated from charging for services. That revenue is called "earned" income, and many charities benefit from establishing these income sources. A recent survey by Temporary Use Aid reveals that 73% of charities find it moderately or extremely difficult to secure spaces. Conducted with over 200 charities, volunteer groups, and social enterprises, the survey highlights the pressing issue of space acquisition in the non-profit sector. However, there's hope. By collaborating with charities, property owners can save more on business rates than through 'box-shifting'. This partnership can provide essential support for vulnerable residents and help charities operate smoothly. Have you encountered similar challenges in securing operational spaces? It's tough out there! Charities are under incredible strain after years of cuts and austerity that have caused them to be needed more than ever by their communities. It is a perfect storm. More need. More red tape. More legislation Higher prices Less funding from All sources as funders, individuals, businesses struggle with the same issues And governments make cuts which cause more problems Charities pick up the pieces of the mess they make The announcement of the closure of Zoes Place in Liverpool is another example of the challenges the sector faces. Hundreds of charities are closing and vital services lost. Many charity staff are burning out, becoming ill or giving up in desperation and exhaustion. It is not bad management. It is unprecedented times. There has never been a greater need for people to give and support their local charities. Give without expecting lots of the charity's time. Give without tieing up the money to projects which means they can't pay staff or bills. Offering time is great but doesn't pay the bills. Regular, unrestricted giving, even in small amounts is like gold dust. Together we can make a difference.

We’re happy to share the insights from our Spring 2024 grant monitoring and evaluation (M&E)! For anyone interested in small charities this report is a valuable snapshot of the challenges faced by the sector. The report shines a light on the progress of charities we funded in our Spring funding rounds over the past few years. Our charities are performing incredibly well, achieving 86% of their transformational targets agreed at the grant’s onset. However, - It is more difficult than ever for small charities to secure funding from trusts and foundations. - Joint applications for funding have often been more successful, but they take time. - The lack of unrestricted, multi-year, core funding available means charities are struggling to strengthen their resilience. As ever, we encourage all funders to think about unrestricted funding.
