Every time I read a health headline, I always have the same two thoughts. 1. What methods were used to support the results? 2. Does the headline match the researcher’s conclusions? These two questions force me to try to understand— how was this done and why does it matter? Asking these questions and maintaining this lens comes in handy while digging into the variations in measurement methodologies among different RMN partners. (More standardization in 2024?) Today, I no longer review and apply findings from health research in my day-to-day. Yet, I still find myself asking the above questions.

One such way to facilitate this is by counting better so that we countmore. By 'counting better' I refer to multi-select options for All demographic questions because we recognize that homogeneity of identity is rare. In addition to 'multi-select' or 'select all that apply' options should be a write in line because inevitably there will be some aspect of identity that will not fit on a demographic questionnaire. These simple adjustments can create big downstream changes.

𝐖𝐡𝐚𝐭 𝐬𝐞𝐭𝐬 𝐇𝐞𝐚𝐥𝐭𝐡 𝐂𝐢𝐭𝐢𝐳𝐞𝐧 𝐒𝐜𝐢𝐞𝐧𝐜𝐞 𝐩𝐫𝐨𝐣𝐞𝐜𝐭𝐬 𝐝𝐢𝐟𝐟𝐞𝐫𝐞𝐧𝐭 𝐟𝐫𝐨𝐦 𝐨𝐭𝐡𝐞𝐫 𝐂𝐒 𝐟𝐢𝐞𝐥𝐝𝐬? A survey conducted by the CS4H Working Group sought to identify the unique aspects of health-related Health CS projects comparted to other CS fields. The survey included 254 respondents from various nationalities, and the key differences identified were: 1. 𝑬𝒕𝒉𝒊𝒄𝒂𝒍 𝒓𝒆𝒒𝒖𝒊𝒓𝒆𝒎𝒆𝒏𝒕𝒔 𝒂𝒏𝒅 𝒄𝒐𝒏𝒔𝒆𝒏𝒕 𝒎𝒆𝒄𝒉𝒂𝒏𝒊𝒔𝒎𝒔: these are of a distinct nature in health-related projects, as noted by 67% of respondents. 2. 𝑹𝒆𝒔𝒆𝒂𝒓𝒄𝒉 𝒔𝒖𝒃𝒋𝒆𝒄𝒕𝒔: in health, citizens are more likely to be the subject of research compared to other areas of citizen science (58%) 3. 𝑺𝒕𝒂𝒌𝒆𝒉𝒐𝒍𝒅𝒆𝒓 𝒅𝒚𝒏𝒂𝒎𝒊𝒄𝒔: patients, doctors, researchers) are more complex in health projects (58%) What are your thoughts on these findings? Share your comments below. Research that makes sense of the real world in a truly impactful manner. Great read. Both Exploration and Elicitation methodologies can be combined to deliver Mixed Methods preference research. This can deliver various benefits dependent on the research need.
